Anxiety → Camp homework 'self-confidence', NC outfield defense 'core' Kim Seong-wook's firm will

“The first task of camp is to have ‘self-confidence.’”

Before enlisting in the Armed Forces Athletic Corps (Sangmu), he performed like an altoran. In 2022, his season at Sangmu ended early when he underwent surgery to remove bone fragments from his right elbow, and he joined the team after being discharged from the military. Last year started off well. At the beginning of the season, NC led the upward trend and shouted for 'resurgence', but the momentum was dampened due to injury. This is the story of Kim Seong-wook (31), the ‘core’ of the NC outfield. Kim Seong-wook reflected on his unstable past and expressed his strong will to ‘Find Kim Seong-wook’ this year.

Kim Seong-wook, whom we met at NC Spring Camp in Tucson, Arizona, USA on the 8th (Korean time), is gritting his teeth and sweating hard in practice and training. He is determined to find certainty about himself by reflecting on what he lacked last year. The 2024 season ‘Finding Kim Seong-wook’ is going smoothly.

Kim Seong-wook said, “Last year started off well, but I think it was definitely a big deal that I suffered a hamstring injury right away due to the lack of training after the surgery. “I think that’s when I started feeling anxious,” he said. “My first task in this camp is ‘self-confidence.’ I think I need to find confidence in myself first. “If the mental aspect is resolved well, I will be able to achieve good results this year,” he said.

Coming to the U.S. two weeks ahead of the camp schedule and getting in shape gave me strength in ‘finding Kim Seong-wook.’ I learned a lot from and received a lot of help from Azusa Pacific University hitting coach Heo Il, who was my middle school senior.

Kim Seong-wook said, “I came to the United States first, worked out, got in shape, and talked a lot about batting with Heo Il-hyung, which gave me a little confidence. “I am implementing what I learned during the camp,” he said. “Rather than making a big change in my hitting, he taught me how to prepare and helped me understand so that I had no choice but to go in the direction I wanted, such as the trajectory of my swing and the trajectory of the batted ball.” “Heo Il-hyung speaks in a really easy to understand way,” he explained. He added, “If I get the chance, I want to come in early next year and work out together.”

With the departure of foreign center fielder Jason Martin this season, NC's starting center fielder is vacant. He is competing with Choi Jeong-won and Chun Jae-hwan for the starting position. Since he is a proven resource in offense and defense, it is no exaggeration to say that he is virtually ahead of the competition for the starting position.
