At the LAAS -- CNRS canteen this year
I am currently a 5th year undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur pursuing a major in Mechanical Engineering. I grew up in Kolkata, West Bengal. I attended Welland Gouldsmith School till the end of my 10th standard. During my 11th and 12th standards, I was a student at Birla High School. All throughout my middle school and high school I was greatly passionate about mathematics. It was mainly a result of growing up in a family where my relatives would gift me "math"-related books for my birthday and other such events. One of the earliest memories of such a gift that I have is of the book "Fun with Mathematics" by the Russian author Yakov I. Perelman. In a city like Kolkata and particularly if one loves wandering around College Street, it is easy to find a whole lot of such precious old Russian books. A majority of the time during high school my mind was preoccupied by some problem that I saw on the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) online website the previous night. It was my most visited website during the two years of high school. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with my 12th standard board examinations over and entrance examinations delayed, I was either solving problems on AoPS online, reading the Feynman Lectures on Physics or solving problems from the popular Indian textbook TOMATO (Test of Mathematics Aptitude at the 10+2 Level). After high school I had gotten selected for undergraduate admission at both the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) (among 40 candidates selected that year from all over India) and the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) (among 126 candidates selected that year from all over India) in their Bachelors in Mathematics and Bachelors in Mathematics and Computing programs respectively. I had almost confirmed my admission at CMI where I had received the Shriram Scholarship for exceptional performance in their entrance examination as well. My interest in robotics which was sparked by my participation in the World Robot Olympiad in 2016 as a 14 year old eventually led me to studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.Â
