Final exam times are scheduled based on the index of default final exam times, but your final exam may not be scheduled during its default slot, and not all classes hold final exams. Always consult your class syllabus, your instructor and/or your department to confirm your specific class information.

When are timetables made available?

We always aim to publish the timetable 4 weeks before the exam period begins, and we will make the timetable publication date and the examination period dates available on our website at the start of each academic year.

How do I access my timetable?

Students are notified via email when the exam timetable is published. Timetables for each School and Research Institute can be accessed on the Registry website.

Can I see my timetable sooner?

The timetable is dependent upon course enrolments, and as these vary the timetable is different every year. Students can change their enrolments until the end of week 2 of teaching, and whilst a lot of preparatory work before this date, work cannot begin to create a clash-free timetable until enrolments are finalised.

Who sets the dates and times of my exams?

Examinations are timetabled centrally by the Registry Team, in line with University agreed guidelines. The guidelines are aimed at achieving a balance between producing reasonable student timetables, meeting requests from academic departments and taking into account room size and availability. Exams are timetabled in GMT/BST (UK time).

What is the timetabling policy?

You should not normally expect to sit to sit more than three examinations in two days or a morning examination the day after an evening examination. Registry will take all reasonable steps to ensure that these conditions are met, however as timetables are subject to several constraints your timetable may not always fit within these guidelines.

Why are my exams on consecutive days, or 2 exams on the same day?

Sometimes it is impossible to avoid scheduling exams on consecutive days or placing two exams in one day. This is due to a large number of students registered on courses requiring examinations during a limited period.

For many programmes on offer at the University, students are provided with an extensive range of modules to choose from. This has several benefits and advantages, but also means that creating an exam timetable can be a very complex process.

Work on the timetable starts 3-4 months before the exam period and involves several different stages and checks. Specialist exam scheduling software is used to try and ensure the best possible timetable is created.

Examination dates and start times for the 2023/24 academic year are now available and can be viewed below. For 2023/24, the University will continue to adopt a hybrid approach to assessment, involving a mixture of in-person and online examinations.

IMPORTANT

Please note, students must be available for examinations at all times during examination periods. The dates listed below are for centrally timetabled examinations only. Departments may also organize locally timetabled examinations outside of these periods.

Students taking in-person examinations with approved Alternative Exam Arrangements will sit their examinations from 09:00 GMT/BST for morning sessions and 13:30 GMT/BST for afternoon sessions. There may occasionally be variations to these start times and if you are sitting exams in department, you should follow the guidance provided by your department.

Final exam dates and times provided in the drop down table below are for classes following standard teaching periods. Classes that do not follow a standard teaching period have a non-standard final exam date and time.

Exams for those courses designated as online courses (i.e. sections 50-69) will be administered at the originally scheduled date and time regardless of the changes to the in-class exam schedule due to unexpected University closures.

If your classes begin between 4:00-5:59 p.m., they will have their two-hour final exam scheduled at the usual class starting time during finals week. If a class meets multiple days during the term, the exam will be scheduled on the earliest class meeting day that occurs during finals week.

You are required to take final examinations at the times shown. However, if you have examination conflicts or three (or more) final exams within one calendar day, you may request adjustment with your college office and with your instructor. Such a request must be presented at least two weeks before the examination period begins.
