Review of Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet

Anatomy for the Artist is a book by Sarah Simblet, a professor who teaches the subject at the University of Oxford's Ruskin School of Art. It is a beautifully illustrated guidebook to drawing human anatomy, using superb, specially commissioned photographs of male and female models, historical and contemporary works of art, and Simblet's own illustrations.

The book shows how to see inside the human frame, to map its muscle groups and skeletal structure, to capture its balance, poise, and grace. It also explains how the body's outer appearance relates to its internal anatomy, using transparent pages that overlay the photographs with diagrams of the bones and muscles.

The book covers different anatomical areas in detail, such as the head, neck, torso, limbs, hands, and feet. It also provides techniques for seeing and portraying the human body as a whole, as well as tips for drawing from life and using perspective. In addition, the book features ten "masterclass" sections, where Simblet analyzes great works of art by artists such as Hans Holbein, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Edward Hopper, using photographs of models in the same pose to invite readers to see the human body as the masters did.

Anatomy for the Artist is a valuable resource for artists of all levels who want to understand and interpret the human body, and to imaginatively represent it in their own work. It is available as a hardcover book or as a PDF file that can be downloaded for free from Archive.org[^1^]. The PDF file has 165 pages and a file size of 23.7 MB.Here are a few more paragraphs for the article:

Sarah Simblet was born in 1972 and started drawing at a very young age. She earned a doctorate in drawing at Bristol University in 1998 on European art history and the social history of human dissection. She was awarded the Richard Ford Award travelling scholarship to Spain while she was an undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford between 1991 and 1994, and spent three months working in Madrid from November 1994 to January 1995.

Besides tutoring at Oxford, she is a guest lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, teaching morphological anatomy and physiology from an art perspective to medical students. She also works with youth offenders at Feltham Prison and children in care in Oxfordshire. She also works from a studio in Oxford. Her drawings are to be found in national and private collections including the Royal Academy of Art in London, and the Ashmolean in Oxford. She is a regular contributor to BBC radio and television programmes on natural history and art.

In collaboration with Gabriel Hemery, she co-wrote "The New Sylva - a discourse of forest and orchard trees in the 21st century" published by Bloomsbury Publishing in 2014 to mark the 350th anniversary of John Evelyn's work "Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber". The 200 illustrations for this book necessitated lengthy trips to the native haunts of the trees and drawing them in situ or returning with specimens to her studio in Wootton, West Oxfordshire. 66dfd1ed39
