The Anteater Moot Court (formerly Moot Court at UC Irvine) is a registered on-campus organization (RCO) dedicated to providing a comprehensive forum for any and all undergraduate students at the University of California, Irvine to get involved with and pursue meaningful engagement with the higher-order legal world that is appellate argumentation.
Our organization is fundamentally committed to the rigorous examination and debate of legitimate constitutional issues, the close and careful study of real-world case law, and the development and promotion of analytical, rhetorical, and advocacy skills that distinguish our members as top-tier undergraduate legal minds.
Originally established in 2020, the Anteater Moot Court has, over the course of its history, cultivated and nurtured a record of excellence that is reflected in the accomplishments of its members. Moot Court alumni have gone on post-graduation to study at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world and distinguished graduate programs, including Harvard Law School, the London School of Economics, UCLA Law, and beyond! Our alumni have also gone on to obtain prestigious jobs and internships with the U.S. Department of Justice, Orange County District Attorney's Office, Superior Court of California, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and more.
With each passing year, we continue to grow our footprint on-campus and farther, register more students, compete with a wider footprint, and simply put, get better. We sincerely hope to see you with us behind the podium and take part in the continued growth, excellence, and tradition of achievement that defines the Anteater Moot Court!

A "moot" is a simulated session of Supreme Court-Style argument. Seperate from mock-trial which handles law on the district and trial level, the facts have been stipulated and the rulings have been made but rights may have been violated. Advocates speak directly to the judges not to opposing counsel. You advocate on behalf of your client, not yourself or a witness.
The case problem at bar is completely fictious, however that doesn't make the issues any less real. Real constitutional issues, Supreme Court, Circuit, and District cases are used as well as real laws passed by states and Congress. Moot Court gives exposure to real legal practice in a 'closed universe', competitive, and fun way.
Not a litigator? Not a problem! The Anteater Moot Court welcomes legal-oriented minds of all skills and calibers. Behind the podium and before the courtroom, competitors can participate in a brief writing contest to demonstrate legal writing skills as well! Every case needs a pretext, and this is the way to make the argument before the court.
Every year, the American Moot Court Association (AMCA) runs a nation-wide undergraduate competition with schools from UC Berkeley and CalState Longbeach to Harvard College and Vanderbilt University compete in. We here at UC Irvine also compete through our organization. There are also other regional competitions like the California Classic.

As an enduring commitment to transparency, organizational efficiency, and fairness toward all those who choose to come and participate with us, the Constitution of the Anteater Moot Court was carefully drafted, deliberatively revised, written, and formally adopted in the abiding hope and spirit that all members shall stand and be equal before our organizational policies, without exception or preference. It is our firm conviction, as a matter of principle, that regardless of academic year, organizational tenure, position, or other extraneous factor, our organization believes in equality before the law, fairness in proceedings, the Constitution of the United States, and making a space open for all who believe in the same.
In furtherance of these commitments and in accordance with Registered Campus-Organization (RCO) policies set forth by the University of California, Irvine, the Anteater Moot Court pledges to observe, apply, and follow our Constitution as a guiding North Star in all matters of regular order, deliberation, and organizational governance. Our Constitution is not and shall not serve merely as a procedural formality, but as a definitive and authoritative framework when making any and all relevant decisions regarding all relevant organizational business.

The mission of the Anteater Moot Court Association has two parts to encompass both academic and community-building.
First, the organization aims to introduce its members to the fundamentals of legal analysis and legal writing. Using mock appellate briefs, members are given a realistic opportunity to analyze a legal case from both sides, identify the controlling legal issues and precedent, and construct a coherent, well-supported argument in response. Members then take this analysis a step further by presenting their arguments orally, closely mirroring the work of appellate advocacy. Through this process, members build skills that extend well beyond the courtroom setting, including critical thinking, persuasive writing, public speaking, and the ability to think clearly and respond effectively under pressure. These are skills that serve members not only in law school and legal careers, but in any field that values careful reasoning and clear communication.
Second, the Organization seeks to bring together motivated, like-minded students who share similar goals for law school and legal field careers. Moot court provides a space where students with a shared interest in the law can grow together, challenge one another, and build lasting friendships and professional connections. As part of this effort, more senior members are encouraged to mentor and support junior members, offering guidance not only on competition preparation but also on broader matters such as the law school admissions process, personal statement development, and navigating pre-law life at UCI more generally. In this way, the Association aims to function not just as a competitive team, but as a supportive community where experience is passed down and members are equipped to pursue their goals with greater confidence and clarity.
