If you want a rugged, fully submersible audio solution built for serious laps and open-water survival, choose ANSTEN Swimming Headphones; if you need a stylish, fashion-forward accessory that delivers all-day comfort and extended battery life for daily commutes or gym sessions, choose Monster Open Ear AC520. This isn't about which one is cheaper or more popular; it is about matching the right hardware to your specific lifestyle. I have analyzed the specifications of both devices to cut through the marketing noise, and the differences in their core design philosophies are stark. One is a specialized tool for water sports, while the other is a versatile lifestyle companion. Understanding this distinction is the only way to make a smart purchase without ending up with a pair of headphones that fight you instead of supporting your routine.
• ANSTEN Swimming Headphones: Its greatest strength is the IPX8 waterproof rating and 8GB internal MP3 memory, making it the only viable option for actual underwater swimming; its trade-off is the reliance on physical buttons rather than touch controls, which can be less convenient for quick skips on land.
• Monster Open Ear AC520: It shines with a unique handbag-style design and an impressive 24-hour total playtime with its charging case, offering a sleek aesthetic for big ears; however, its IPX6 rating limits it to sweat and rain, making it unsuitable for submersion.
• Who should buy which: Choose the ANSTEN if your primary goal is swimming or high-intensity wet environments; choose the Monster if you prioritize style, long battery life, and comfort for running, cycling, or office use where you need to stay aware of your surroundings.
The ANSTEN Swimming Headphones are engineered for a very specific type of user: the swimmer who refuses to listen to silence or rely on flimsy bone-conduction earbuds that cannot handle deep immersion. In practical terms, this means the durable housing and flexible titanium structure are built to withstand being submerged completely, whether you are doing laps in a pool, surfing, or diving. This is a critical differentiator. If you plan to wear headphones underwater, almost anything else will fail. The ANSTEN handles the water, but it does so by prioritizing function over form.
For those with larger ear structures, the fit is another major consideration. These headphones feature an ergonomic design that weighs just 26 grams. The open-ear architecture utilizes bone conduction technology to send sound directly through your cheekbones, bypassing the ear canal entirely. This design choice is crucial for people who find traditional in-ear buds uncomfortable or painful due to pressure points. By avoiding the ear canal, the ANSTEN eliminates the feeling of blockage and allows for a secure fit even during intense movements. The 13mm wideband driver ensures that despite this open design, you still get full, clear 360-degree surround sound. You get immersive audio without the isolation that comes with noise-canceling earbuds, which is exactly what you want when you need to hear the lane lines or safety warnings in the water.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you are looking for the most advanced touch control interface or a device that doubles as a casual fashion statement, the ANSTEN might feel too utilitarian. It relies on button controls rather than touch gestures, which some users might find less intuitive for quick track skipping while running on land. Furthermore, while it supports Bluetooth 6.0 for connecting to your phone, the manual explicitly states you must switch to MP3 mode and turn off your phone's Bluetooth when actually swimming. You cannot stream music from your phone while underwater; you must load your own tracks into the built-in 8GB memory beforehand. This adds a layer of setup that casual listeners might find tedious, but for a dedicated swimmer, it is a non-negotiable requirement for functionality.
The Monster Open Ear AC520 targets a completely different demographic: the active lifestyle enthusiast who values aesthetics, convenience, and longevity over extreme durability. The standout feature here is the unique handbag design. This isn't just a standard pair of earbuds; it features a sleek slide-open mechanism and a removable lanyard that transforms the device into a wearable accessory. For someone with big ears who struggles to find headphones that don't pinch or fall out, the hook enclosure material and the natural curvature fit are designed to distribute weight evenly. The plastic construction feels lightweight and modern, catering to users who want their tech to look good in a gym bag or on a desk.
Battery life is where the Monster really pulls ahead for the average user. While the ANSTEN offers eight hours of continuous playback, the Monster system extends this significantly. You get eight hours on a single charge, but with the included wireless charging case, you can reach a staggering 24 hours of total playtime. This is a game-changer for travelers, long-haul runners, or anyone who works a long shift and wants to keep their music going without hunting for an outlet every few hours. The Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity ensures a low-latency experience, meaning your audio and video stay perfectly synchronized, which is vital for gaming or watching content while moving around.
Despite its versatility, the Monster AC520 has clear limitations regarding water exposure. With an IPX6 rating, it is built to withstand heavy sweat and rain, making it excellent for high-intensity workouts or rainy commutes. However, it lacks the capability to survive submersion. If you accidentally drop them in a puddle or try to wear them while washing your face, you risk damage. Additionally, the control scheme relies on touch controls. While this offers a sleeker interface than physical buttons, it can sometimes be finicky if your hands are sweaty or if you have large fingers that accidentally trigger the sensors. The dynamic driver provides rich, deep bass and crystal-clear highs, delivering the "Pure Monster Sound" promised in the specs, but it lacks the AI noise cancellation found in the ANSTEN, meaning ambient noise will be present during calls.
• Best for underwater swimming → ANSTEN Swimming Headphones: Only the ANSTEN has the IPX8 rating and internal MP3 storage required for true underwater use.
• Best for battery life → Monster Open Ear AC520: The 24-hour total playtime with the charging case beats the ANSTEN's single-session eight hours.
• Best for big ears seeking comfort → Both, but for different reasons: ANSTEN uses bone conduction to avoid the ear canal entirely, while Monster uses a hook design that cradles the outer ear without pressure.
• Best for fashion and portability → Monster Open Ear AC520: The unique handbag design and lanyard make it a style statement, whereas the ANSTEN looks purely functional.
• Best for call clarity in noisy areas → ANSTEN Swimming Headphones: The AI noise reduction and directional sound transmission actively suppress background noise, a feature missing in the Monster.
• Best for gaming or video sync → Monster Open Ear AC520: The low-latency Bluetooth 6.0 connection ensures perfect audio-video synchronization without delay.
• Best value for multi-sport users → Monster Open Ear AC520: If you run, cycle, and work out in the rain but never swim, the longer battery and lighter design offer better everyday utility.
• Best for safety awareness → Both: Both utilize open-ear designs to keep you aware of traffic and surroundings, but the ANSTEN's bone conduction is slightly more focused on safety in aquatic environments.
After weighing the specifications and real-world use cases, I would personally choose the ANSTEN Swimming Headphones if my primary goal was to integrate music into my swimming routine, as no other option truly competes on water resistance. However, for the vast majority of users who do not swim competitively, the Monster Open Ear AC520 is the superior choice for its incredible battery life, stylish handbag design, and ease of use. If you have big ears, the Monster's hook design often provides a more comfortable, all-day fit for general activities compared to the sport-specific fit of the ANSTEN. Ultimately, the decision comes down to whether you need a specialized tool for the pool or a versatile companion for the rest of your life. I recommend the Monster for daily wear and the ANSTEN for the water.
While both models cater to open-ear needs, the Monster AC520's hook design is specifically shaped to fit the natural curvature of the ear, which many users with larger ear structures find more comfortable for extended wear than standard clip-ons.
The ANSTEN includes active AI noise cancellation for clearer calls and reduced ambient noise, whereas the Monster AC520 does not list active noise cancellation, relying instead on its open-ear design for situational awareness.
The Monster Open Ear AC520 features touch controls and a low-latency Bluetooth 6.0 connection, making it a strong candidate for gaming scenarios where quick responses and audio synchronization matter more than underwater durability.
No, the Monster AC520 has an IPX6 water resistance rating, which protects against sweat and rain but is not sufficient for submersion; you must use the ANSTEN for any activity involving being underwater.
