Earlier Building of the Anthropological Survey of India, North East Regional Centre, Shillong
Anthropological Survey of India, North East Regional Centre, Shillong
Anthropological Survey of India, North East Regional Centre, Shillong was opened in May 1953 in a private building addressed Swastika, Laitumkhrah Main Road, Shillong with a Social/Cultural Division, Physical Anthropology Division along with Linguistics, Human Ecology, Psychology, Statistics, Photography and Library. The Zonal Anthropological Museum of this Regional Centre was inaugurated on 25th April 1979.
Initially, since its inception, the NERC focused on the ethnographic studies on the population of Northeast India, the study of genetic parameters, genetic markers including blood groups, PTC testing ability dermatoglyphics, anthropometric measurements including micro-level studies to evaluate the micro-evolutionary dynamics of the population in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland till 1990s.
Later North East Regional Centre, Shillong was shifted to Shiv Bhavan, Upper Lachumiere and finally on 30th April 2001 it shifted to its present building at Mawblei, Block-‘B’, Madanriting, Shillong, Meghalaya 793021. The DNA laboratory of this region started functioning in 2006.
Presently, two region-specific projects are running, namely, Assessment of Health, Hygiene and Sanitation of Khasi in North East India with Special reference to Women and Children and another one is Digital Literarily and its Impact on Cultural Heritage Preservation. Besides, two scholars are assigned with studying Himalayan Bordering Villages in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Zonal Anthropological Museum of North East Regional Centre was inaugurated on 25th April 1979.
