9. A lasso-alternative to Dijkstra algorithm for identifying short paths in networks                (finished 2020 - accepted 2026)

Afterwards: the idea for this paper was first proposed in the winter of 2019, during a graduate-level course on network science taught by Tryphon. Tryphon realized that the shortest path problem could be formulated as a LASSO regression problem. While the shortest path problem is well known to admit a linear programming formulation, the LASSO formulation was unexplored. We decided to write a paper on this topic as my first research project. Before that, I had not worked on anything related to it, as I had originally hoped to study optimal transport for image processing. Together with Amir, we were able to establish an equivalence between the bidirectional Dijkstra algorithm and the LARS algorithm. As it turned out, the submission process was far from smooth: the paper was rejected several times before it finally found its place.
