Movie of Jean Detheux

(illustrated by luthenist Xavier Díaz-Latorre, playing "Treinta y nueue diferencias de Xácara" of Francisco Guerau)

(copy text Jean Detheux )

"I am absolutely delighted to have the privilege to do a movie with the great musician Xavier Díaz-Latorre (http://www.xavierdiazlatorre.com). Through very fortuitous circumstances, we connected recently around Maestro Jordi Savall’s concert in Montréal (February 1st, "VENISE MILLÉNAIRE PORTE DE L'ORIENT 770-1797”) and Xavier generously accepted to collaborate on this movie.

Music is by Francisco Guerau (1649 – 1717/1722), his "Treinta y nueue diferencias de Xácara”. “Diferencias” are variations and in this case, the variations evolve in a very subtle manner, the theme reappearing many times, the whole thing being served beautifully by the guitar of Xavier Díaz-Latorre.

As usual, I do not try to “illustrate” the music, but do my very best to enter in dialog with it: sometimes the music is in the foreground, sometimes the images are and, if lucky, they may manage together to create an experience that neither alone could suggest.
