URMUL is an NGO based in Rajasthan, which, along with a group of organizations, has been innovating models to induce community-driven socio-developmental changes by devising programs, strengthening them, sustaining them, and eventually handing them over to the communities.
I participated in a one-week internship program at Pokhran, Rajasthan, which was a collaboration between URMUL and the Social Service League of St. Stephen's College, Delhi. The aim was to understand the day-to-day challenges of the rural community and work toward uplifting them. During this time, our group interacted with local people, conducted surveys to gather information about their livelihood and household matters. After the survey, we provided general awareness on the importance of sanitation, the education of girl children, and offered ideas to improve their farming or livelihood practices. We also worked as teachers in a government school, trying to understand and assess if any changes were needed in the curriculum.
On the final day of our internship, we had a meeting with higher authorities where we presented our concerns about the lack of government support for the villagers and suggested ideas for better functioning.
