General practitioners’ management of patients with mental disorders and collaboration with other health professionals, joint with Tojerow I.
In Belgium, one-third of the adult population faces a mental health disorder leading to work disability. General practitioners (GPs) play a key role in managing patients with mental health disorders. In this particularly concerning context, using survey data, this study examines the quality of mental health care provided by GPs and determines whether differences in quality stem from demand or supply of care. In addition, it investigates whether the quality of mental health care improves when GPs collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals, especially within the framework of integrated care.
How much is too much? Hospital capacity, occupancy and quality in Belgium, joint with Tojerow I.
The number of available hospital beds in Belgium has decreased between 1990 and 2019. However, there is still concern that the number of beds remains excessively high, particularly in Wallonia, and that available beds are not used efficiently. The objective of this study is to determine whether hospitals with consistently higher bed occupancy rates are associated with lower quality and whether a series of factors related to healthcare demand and supply, as well as determinants of bed occupancy rates, can explain this association. The project focuses on general hospitals, relying on administrative data matched with contextual data at the municipal level.
Estimating general practitioners’ performance in low medical density areas: evidence from French synthetic cohort data (Revise & Resubmit)
Disparities in physicians' geographical distribution lead to highly unequal access to healthcare, which may impact quality of care, especially in areas with low medical density. We use five independent cross-sectional surveys on private practice general practitioners (GPs) in France from 2007 to 2013 matched with Social Security data. We adopt Deaton's approach to create 5 cohorts of GPs (266 GPs per cohort on average) that form a synthetic cohort. We estimate linear fixed effects model for variables describing GPs working conditions, such as workload and working hours, as well as several per patient prescription indicators, e.g., total volume of drug prescription, lab tests, nurses, physical therapists. Results suggest that GPs in lower density areas have greater workload, prescribe more drugs and lab tests. There is no significant difference in prescription of paramedics (both nurses and physical therapists).
Pay up or get your shot! Analyzing the impact of the out-of-pocket Covid-19 testing policy adoption on the vaccination dynamics in France, joint with Michel P. (Under review)
We analyse the impact of the discontinuation of free access to Covid-19 screening tests for non-vaccinated population, implemented from October 15, 2021, on their vaccination decision in mainland France using segmented regression method on open panel data from Public Health France with the daily number of first vaccine injections as our variable of interest. Discontinuation of free access to Covid-19 screening tests has had a positive and significant impact on vaccination uptake in all mainland French departments. The number of first doses plummets between the end of August and September 2021, then slightly increases after the policy was implemented. Higher poverty rate, the share of long-term-disease beneficiaries and hospital mortality increased the number of new vaccinations while higher aging index, unemployment rate and share of non-graduates in population had a significant negative impact on vaccination. Controlling for the announcement effect yields similar estimations. Results remain robust when considering different bandwidth choices and estimation periods.
