Anna Kendrick has emphasised the importance of setting boundaries when you are dating, recalling how she once broke up with someone because he did not respect her.
This month, Kendrick’s television series Love Life is set to be released on HBO Max.
The 10-episode series follows a series of friends as they navigate a variety of relationships, from first loves to long-term partnerships.
During a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald ’s Sunday Life supplement, Kendrick opened up about her own dating history and the lesson about boundaries she was taught at a young age.
The Pitch Perfect star said that she “cringed” at the way that she, “and so many women that I know”, dating men when they were in their early 20s, “the way we were so awkward and needy and clingy”.

“Looking back now, it’s like, ‘Oh god, I acted like such a jerk in that relationship.’ Or all the times I didn’t feel strong enough to say, ‘You can’t speak to me that way.’ I’m just so happy that I’m clearer now about what I will accept from people in my life.”
The 34-year-old continued, explaining how the themes of Love Life reminded her of certain parts of her life.
“When I was maybe 14 or 15, somebody gave me this specific example, that if you’re ever in a car with a guy, and he’s driving, and as as joke he lets go of the wheel and makes you grab it, that is not a guy you want to be with,” she said.
“He might say, ‘Hey, I’m just joking, why are you being so sensitive?’ But really, he’s testing your boundaries and what you’re willing to put up with and trying to make you uncomfortable.”
Kendrick recollected a relationship she had in her late teens, when her partner would frequently tickle her despite her requesting him not to.
“It sounds silly, but I dated a guy when I was 19 who tickled me all the time and I don’t like being tickled, because it makes me claustrophonic. So I kept saying, ‘This is a problem for me. Please don’t do it’,” she stated.

“But kept doing it and I thought, ‘He’s the guy with the steering wheel!’ So, I broke up with him and he told everyone it was because he tickled me. I was like, ‘No, dude, I broke up with you because you didn’t respect me!’”
During the interview, Kendrick also spoke about why she’s not interested in filming nude scenes, joking that she found a “new appreciation for people who own sex dolls” while she was filming Quibi series Dummy .
The actor said that she’s “never had a problem with simulated sex scenes”.
“That feels like it’s about the character, whereas I only get one body, so nudity is more about me,” she explained.

Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick have starred in only one film together. The actors played each others love interest in 2016, American Comedy Drama film Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates . The film also starred actor’s Aubrey Plaza and Adam DeVine in the lead. Although it’s a romantic comedy, the film is based on a real Craigslist ad placed by two brothers who wanted dates for their cousin's wedding in February 2013. The ad became very popular and the brother’s later turned it into a book titled Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: And a Thousand Cocktails.

In addition to the fact that our generation has made the brilliant decision that it’s cool to.

(it’s not cool it’s just irritating and nobody benefits from this nebulous non-arrangement but whatever it’s fine it’s FINE), twenty-something celebrities have recently had a lot to say about the dating scene, and the consensus seems to be this: it sucks.
Anna Kendrick shared a relatable (and low key mortifying) story in her new book Scrappy Little Nobody about dating when she was in her early twenties, and we’re cringing AND laughing.
The excerpt from her book was shared by Glamour , and it’s a real doozy. Apparently Anna Kendrick dated a musician named Conor when she was twenty till she was twenty-one, and in retrospect she realizes he clearly had limited interest in her, and that if she hadn’t pursued the non-relationship, it probably would’ve fizzled out. Been there, lady.
“Part of me knew I was only determined to bring him around because he was resisting, but the idea of acknowledging the rejection hurt more than pretending the relationship might be going somewhere.”
She continues to try and make him her boyfriend despite his unwillingness to place labels on their relationship, even going so far as to make him breakfast when he’s down and show up at his gigs. While there’s definitely some willful ignorance and plain old naivety going on, it mostly just sounds like Anna Kendrick was really nice to this dude and he was an enormous jerk.
“The next time we had a vague talk about ‘what we were doing,’ he seemed to debate himself Sméagol/Gollum style in front of me: ‘Well, we get along…and I’m not saying that I want to be with anyone else right now…but I guess I don’t want to miss out on any opportunities.’ I should have screamed, ‘I’m the opportunity, you asshat!’ But I clenched my teeth and convinced myself once again that I didn’t need a label. Before I left, I at least managed to ask the question.”
Eventually, Connor breaks up with her and she goes to work on a film out of state, heartbroken. She even finds out that Connor got together with the girl he said he had no interest in. The actual worst.
Our hearts go out to Anna, but also to ourselves, and everybody else in their twenties. The dating scene, man. It’s paaaainful.
