ABOUT THE PROJECT
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Fur is a pet adoption website and targets young and old pet lovers who would not want to go through the hassle and uncertainty of adopting through a shelter or adoption centers. Fur was created to make the whole adoption process simple and easy as it has all the information needed including facts.
The Problem
Pet lovers find it hard adopting a pet through social media or adoption centers due to the unreliability of available information about the particular pet they would love to adopt.
Project Duration
September to November 2022
My Role
I worked on this project as a UX Designer, UX Researcher, User Interface Designer. I put accessibility into account as i iterated on my designs. I worked alone on this project.
The Goal
Design a bakery app that allows busy users get their specific order delivered to their exact location and that also make healthy baked food available and accessible.
Responsibilities
User Research
Wireframing
Lo-Fi Prototype
Mockups
Usability Studies
Persona creation
Hi-Fi Prototype
Visual Design
MY DESIGN PROCESS
In the design phase, I focus on the most effective and efficient way to construct the solution and make the overall experience better.
Empathize
Empathizing with the user through user research is a crucial step in every design process.
Define
Analyzing the data collected from research to know the actual problem.
Ideate
This is the part where I come up with the best possible solution to solve the problem.
Prototype
Starting with the user's journey maps to wire-frames, lo-fi and high fidelity, prototypes and the final UI Design.
EMPATHIZE
Understanding the user
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their specific needs. I turned the information i got from the research into empathy maps and created personas.
User Personas
Based on the research findings, I came up with two personas and a journey map which describes the potential users's frustrations and goals as well as the series of events a user will have to go through as they achieve their goal while using the product.
User Story
As an extrovert who is also a dog lover, I want to adopt a puppy without going through the stress of an adoption centre so that I can have a dog best friend to keep me company.
As a volunteer and mum of nine healthy pets, I want to be able to adopt more pets easily, regardless of breed so that I can give back to society in my own little way.
DEFINE
In the define phase, all the aspects of the collected information and facts are compiled together to arrive at a sustainable solution for all identified problem. I created user journey maps, problem statements and sitemap/user flow.
Problem Statements
Simon is a busy musician and dog lover who needs to adopt a pet because he would love having a dog around as company.
Rebecca is a volunteer and pet mum who needs an easier way to adopt more pets because she sees it as an act of giving back to the society.

IDEATE
In the Ideate phase, I did a lot of brainstorming and came up with a lot of ideas which i iterated as the design phase continued. I drew up wireframes and made some sketches which helped me come up with the best solution for the problem that users face when dealing with bakery apps. Also, I conducted a competitive audit to check out what our competitors are doing right and wrong and how I could use that information in making sure that the Pet Shelter website (FUR) live up to standard.
Under the Ideate phase, I will drop down pointers as to what to expect as I move through this aspect of the design process:
How might we questions
Competitive Audits
Paper Wireframes
Digital Wireframes
Low Fidelity Prototype
How Might We Questions
How might we make adopting pets easy and straightforward for the user?
How might we bring pet adoption closer to the user?
How might we encourage pet adoption?
Competitive Audit
While ideating to come up with best solution to the existing user problem, I went online and researched on some already existing pet adoption websites like Adopt a pet, Pet finder, Rescue me and others. Comparing those websites and studying them helped me understand what kind of users I will be designing for, what to expect and what to avoid in my user centered designs. I needed to come up with a better website that would solve user problems and really give the users ease. I specifically focused on three pet adoption websites:
PET FINDER:
This website specializes in all kinds of pets from traditional dogs and cats to barnyard bunnies etc. It also has a feature where you can filter your search according to pets age, organization and traits. You get to receive mails as well about pet training and grooming.
ADOPT A PET:
This website is pretty straightforward, making it easy for people who are not as technologically inclined. You also have the option to filter search according to location, age and breed.
PET SMART CHARITIES:
On this website, you can adopt and also donate. Like most adoption websites i researched on, pet smart charities narrows your pet search down by Zip code, breed, color, size, age and gender. They feature horses, farm animals, rabits and birds.
Paper Wireframes
After concluding on my competitive audit, I started brainstorming on solutions to the problem. I needed to plan out how my website was supposed to function and its outlook so I did some sketches. I iterated on the sketches and drew out ideas which I could pick out from when I have established the final design. Since this was a responsive website, I also had to sketch up wireframes for both desktop and phone screen sizes.

Takeaways
The most important thing I have understood from working on this project is that Progression is better than perfection. This project taught me that being a good designer means having a good growth mindset and being ready to make mistakes and learn from them. As long as I am moving forward in my designs, I can always do better in the next one.
Continue to improve on the design.
Conduct another round of usability studies in case there are ways to improve.
Developing live chat where pet lovers can easily communicate with the shelter righ on the site.
Build recommendation page
Add a customer loyalty feature
