CAMP AG was created as an educational summer camp designed to inspire a new generation of curious learners through games that teach academics. Experienced high schoolers and graduates of the Ann Arbor Academic Games team will join to teach a week-long course detailing the basics of games that teach core subjects, like math through Equations, set theory through On-Sets, English language arts through OnWords or LinguiSHTIK, US history through Presidents, and more. Student-founded and student-led, this summer camp’s purpose is to pique interest in learning through Academic Games.
Academic Games is a club that teaches a series of games created to teach students of all ages subjects like math, logic, history, current events, etc. These games instill a love of knowledge in students from an early age, and teach advanced concepts that often surpass school-level proficiencies. Students can compete in regional and state tournaments (hosted by the Michigan Leagues of Academic Games), and those in the Adventurous division (fifth graders and select fourth graders) can qualify for the annual National Tournament (hosted by the Academic Games League of America).
More can be found on the official Michigan Leagues of Academic Games (https://mlagonline.com/) and Academic Games League of America (AGLOA) websites (https://agloa.org/).
Academic Games is divided into multiple divisions based on school grade level, as well as Basic and Adventurous which is based on level of difficulty.
The Minor division includes students in third and fourth grade. The Minor division may play Equations, On-Sets, On-Words, Presidents, and Propaganda. The Elementary division includes students in fifth and sixth grade, and perhaps a small number of returning fourth graders. The Elementary division may play Equations, On-Sets, On-Words or LinguiSHTIK, Presidents, and Propaganda. Gameplay varies slightly between the two divisions. New students in fifth grade are placed in the Elementary Basic division, while returning Elementary level students play in the Adventurous level which has more advanced rules and added complexity.
Equations: fundamentals of math
On-sets: set theory
Propaganda: analysis of techniques of language
Presidents: American history
On-Words: English vocabulary and phonetics
LinguiSHTIK: American English language and grammar
