What is chronic ankle instability

Chronic ankle instability is a debilitating condition resulting from a twisted ankle. To more precisely, it is the “giving way” of the ankle on the outside (lateral). Strong ligaments support the ankles. But when these ligaments stretch beyond their limits, their breaking point, they tear. This can be extremely painful. Ligaments are fibrous, strong tissues that attach the bones to one another. Bones are held in place by ankle ligaments. These ligaments prevent excessive movement, stabilize joints and prevent injury. Sprained ankles typically happens in the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

There are many types of strains. They range from small tears in ligament fibers to extensive tears in tissues. An ankle that has been torn may become unstable in the future. Eventually, this can lead to damage to the ankle’s cartilage and bones. This is when chronic ankle instability occurs.

Many people are susceptible to sprains. But certain activities and sports increase the risk. Instability in the ankle is quite common among athletes, but it is also a problem in everyday life. Mild or moderate sprains are common and can affect people of all ages.

Although most heal with ice and rest, others require medical attention. However, repetitive ankle sprains can lead to chronic ankle pain and instability. With time, it can also lead to arthritis. If you cannot put your weight on your ankle, contact Dr. Hassan immediately. If your injury is left untreated, you could further damage your angle and sprain it again.
