Anishinàbe Odjìbikan is an Anishinàbe-led archaeological field school and a joint effort between the Anishinàbe Algonquin communities of Kitigàn Zìbì Anishinàbeg and the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation. The group was founded after a stone mòkòman (knife) was discovered within the parliamentary precinct during the rehabilitation of Centre Block in 2019. Shortly thereafter, a meeting was called between PSPC, KZA, and AoPFN, and a funding agreement was reached through the Strategic Partnership Initiative (ISC). The purpose of the field school is to build capacity in the field of archaeology for the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation and the team is comprised of members from both communities. The field school most notably conducts archaeological excavations within the heart of Anishinàbe Algonquin territory, better known today as the “National Capital Region” which encompasses the present-day Ottawa/Gatineau area.
