2018-2025: Using a combination of neuroethological and systems neuroscience methods including dense neural recordings in behaving animals, my research focuses on the functions of the basal ganglia-cortical circuits and the dopaminergic system. The basal ganglia-cortical-dopamine circuits, essential for motor skill learning and the etiological locus of a number of movement disorders, are very similar in mammals and birds. I leverage this similarity along with the unique advantage of the songbird vocal-motor learning ability to investigate the how and when of the circuit mechanisms supporting vocal-motor learning and plasticity.

We characterized the population neural dynamics of the vocal-motor cortico-basal ganglia (CBG) circuit using 384-channel Neuropixels probe in zebra finches and its modulation by different behavioural states - sleep, rest, singing. In our latest preprint, we discover, from the simultaneous recordings of two brain areas in the songbird CBG circuit, state-dependent modulation of LFP oscilaltions across the CBG circuit with the LFP-spiking dynamics reminiscent of mammalian-like 'sharp-wave ripples' predominantly during sleep.
