Your Lie in April is a beautiful animation telling a deeply emotional story of love, loss, and the healing power of music. This story is about a young piano prodigy Kosei Arima and a free-spirited violinist Kaori Miyazono. The series is filled with vibrant colors and a soundtrack that will bring you to tears, it takes us on a journey through grief, passion, and self-discovery.
Kosei Arima, a piano prodigy, finds himself lost after the death of his mother and is unable to hear his own playing. Her strict and often abusive methods shaped him into a prodigy, but they also stripped the music of its emotion and joy. The trauma of the death of his mother has riddled him, unable to hear his only playing due to the guilt he feels from the very last words he spoke to her.
However, his meeting with Kaori Miyazono slowly pulls him back into the world of music, helping him express his trauma and grief, bringing the color back into his life and his playing. When they first met, he was introduced to her as the ever dependable friend A and is tricked into going back to Towa hall, a musical convention center where he had played in his previous piano competitions. But, this is where he hears Kaori play the violin for the very first time. Thus starts his journey back into the world of music.
In Your Lie in April, music becomes a powerful element that helps the characters express what they can’t through words. For Kosei, also known as the human metronome, music was a mechanical performance due to his mother’s strict expectations, while Kaori’s performances are spontaneous and filled with passion. Though their styles have a sharp contrast, the duet they play together becomes a conversation. The musical exchanges they have effortlessly convey how they feel about music and each other.
The use of pieces like Chopin and Beethoven show the weight of emotion the characters convey and specific moments of character development. The music in the series helps show what the characters are trying to say to one another making each performance an important moment for each character.
Kaori Miyazono is the spark that reignites Kosei’s love for music and life. From the moment she is introduced, she is carefree and very expressive with a crush on Kosei’s best friend Watari. Kaori is basically the opposite of Kosei and doesn’t want to play music the “right way” and plays it her way instead, to touch the hearts of those who watch her perform. While Kaori appears full of life, she is secretly battling a serious illness. Her choice to live loudly and love deeply despite this fact becomes an even more powerful lesson for Kosei. She helps him learn that life is fleeting and that the beauty in life comes from embracing it.
The animation style of this anime also plays a crucial role, filled with soft lighting, bright pastel colors, and beautiful scenes. The art style helps deepen its connection with the audience. It helps the characters emotions shine through and helps set the tone of each scene. Throughout the anime you will see shifts in the color palette that shows how much detail went into depicting what each character is going through and what they are feeling which in my opinion made the animation absolutely stunning. It’s a visual that’s just as powerful as the music.
Spoiler Alert!!!
Now for the lie, this had me absolutely weeping. Throughout the series Koari presents herself as a carefree energetic girl who lives life to the fullest. It’s in the final episode that we learn the truth. Kaori’ true feelings are revealed through a letter that changes everything. It reveals the secret that she kept till the very end that goes into depth about her struggles and deepens the emotional impact of the storyline. It was heartbreaking to find out.
This anime is a moving piece of art that takes us on a crazy journey. Though the series may end in a loss so much was gained throughout the series, which makes it a truly beautiful work of art. I highly recommend this anime. It shows us that even the shortest of relationships can have a lifelong impact. It’s a series that resonates with your soul, that I absolutely love. So if you’re looking for a story that will bring you to tears and fill your heart I definitely recommend watching.
