Dr. Mario Gil

Moderator & Panelist

Dr. Mario Gil is an Assistant Professor in the UTRGV Department of Psychological Science, with a joint appoint in the UTRGV School of Medicine Neuroscience Institute/Department of Neuroscience, and he holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Florida State University. He is an academic scientist with 15 years of experience in animal behavior research. His main research focus is social and reproductive neuroscience. He teaches an Animal Behavior course (PSYC 3383) and other related courses.

Dr. Wendy James-Aldridge

Moderator & Panelist

Wendy James-Aldridge was a faculty member in the department of psychology and frequent department chair at the (then) University of Texas – Pan American for more than 40 years. With a Ph.D. in experimental psychology, she often taught Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, and Research Methods, but the classes that students wanted to talk about when they came to visit her long after they had graduated were her courses in Animal Behavior and Primate Behavior. In those classes, like several of the presenters today, they conducted projects at the zoo. Her connection with the zoo (she was named Curator of Behavior Research in 1988) provided her students with a living lab and the zoo with valuable assistants who helped collect behavior data on the animals in their collection. Although she officially retired from her university position in 2015, she has maintained her position with the zoo and continues to work with students who serve as interns and as volunteer research assistants.

Dr. Patrick Burchfield

Dr. Patrick M Burchfield has worked professionally in the zoo and animal management field for more than 60 years. He has a background working with a wide variety of Endangered species and has developed breeding programs for many of them. He has a background with venomous snakes and snakebite treatment and antiserum production and helped to establish the Clodomiro Picado Institute in Costa Rica in the late 1960’s.


In addition to his responsibilities as Executive Director of Gladys Porter Zoo, he has headed up the US Field Assistance Group for the Binational Kemp’s ridley sea turtle recovery program in Mexico for the last 40 years.

Claudia Martinez

Moderator, Presenter, & Panelist

Claudia Martinez is a lecturer at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She first attended the University of Texas Pan American, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then attended the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she received her Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology. She has experience collecting behavioral data on the western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees at the Gladys Porter Zoo. Both academically and personally, Martinez’s fields of specialization are primatology and animal behavior.

Ashley Grady

Presenter

Ashley Grady is a junior at UTRGV pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and is a Primate Keeper at the Gladys Porter Zoo caring for great apes, old world monkeys, new world monkeys, and lemurs. Originally from Florida, she earned her Associate's Degree in Zoo Animal Technology back in 2018 from the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. She has been in Brownsville for a little over two years now working with the Gladys Porter Zoo, and her project showcased at the symposium is focused on the interactions of two lemur species that reside on the same island and the potential for aggressive tendencies around feeding times, non-feeding times or both between the two species.

Katelynn Rentería

A native of The Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, Katelynn Rentería is an award-winning novelist. She graduated as valedictorian, Class of 2018, from Harlingen CISD, and frequently visits South Texas campuses to give presentations advocating literacy, and motivates students to read, write, and always move forward in accomplishing their goals. She is a board member for the South Texas Literacy Coalition, Treasurer for the Valley Byliners Writers' Org. of the RGV, and has earned an Associate's of Science Degree in Biology (Texas State Technical College), a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology (UTRGV), summa cum laude, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Experimental Psychology as a member of the Behavior & Systems Neuroscience Laboratory at UTRGV.

Patricia Scanlan

Presenter & Moderator

Patricia Scanlan is a Brownsville native and mother of one, and has always known she wanted to work with animals, therefore gravitated towards courses such as Animal Science, Biology, and Animal Behavior. As many students do, her major shifted a few times during her time as an undergrad, eventually settling on what would be a multidisciplinary approach to her career. Patricia graduated from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (2018) with a Bachelor's in Liberal Arts - Multidisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Anthropology & History. She is currently pursuing a Master's of Liberal Arts in Anthropology Degree with concentrations in Animal Behavior (PSYC) and Art History.

She began with Gladys Porter Zoo back in 2003 as their Senior Aquarist, later moving into reptiles as the demolition and construction of the new Russel Aquatic Center began. In approximately 2014-2015, she took on the role of Enrichment and Training Coordinator marking her entry into zoo-wide animal welfare. Currently, Patricia serves as Gladys Porter Zoo’s Curator of Behavioral Husbandry where she strives to promote and maximize the overall well-being, both physical and mental, of the animals within the zoo's care in compliance with Gladys Porter Zoo, USDA, and Association of Zoos and Aquariums standards and guidelines.

Teresa Shumaker

Teresa Shumaker is a photographer, avid researcher, and UTRGV alumni.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2017, just two weeks after her son, Finn, was born. While she was working on her B.S. in psychology, she focused on neuroscience and animal behavior.

Before attending UTRGV, Teresa worked as a zookeeper at the San Antonio Zoo for 4 years. During that time she was the enrichment coordinator and the training coordinator for her department. From that experience, she learned that the mental health of animals in captivity is very important.

Teresa is currently the Associate Director of the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy.

Linda Salinas

Linda M. Salinas is a 2008 graduate from the University of Texas at Pan American where she earned a BA in Social Studies. In 2016, she attended Texas A&M Kingsville and earned her MS in Educational Technology.


She is a passionate innovator with Harlingen CISD with over twelve years of experience in designing and implementing engaging learning experiences for students at the secondary level. Salinas has been recognized with: Humanities Texas Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities, HCISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, PBS Learning Media Digital Innovator, Dr. Cano Freshman Academy Teacher of the Year, and HCISD Teacher of the Week. She was a guest blogger for TASA's Vision in Practice and a guest moderator for #TxEduChat on Twitter. Salinas currently serves as a Project Lead the Way teacher at STEM² Preparatory Academy where she focuses on the engineering design process while teaching courses such as Flight and Space, Design and Modeling, and Automation and Robotics.

Panelist

Kathleen McWhorter is a Lecturer II in the Psychological Sciences department at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She teaches a number of undergraduate courses including Research Methods, Introduction to Statistics, Social Psychology and Positive Psychology. She enjoys spending her spare time reading novels, playing with her pets, and spending time outdoors with her family.

Dr. Lucia Carreon Martinez

Dr. Carreon has a Master’s degree from UT Austin Marine Science Institute, and a PhD from University of Windsor, Windsor Ontario CANADA. Has been at UTRGV since 2015. Dr. Carreon involved her Animal Behavior students with Gladys Porter Zoo to perform animal behavior observations.

Dr. Christian Corrales

Moderator

Dr. Christian Corrales, a native of Brownsville, TX, is the Assistant Vice President for Community Engagement at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In this position, Dr. Corrales is charged with providing leadership oversight, and vision to the Office of Community Engagement to becoming a national leader in community-engaged scholarship in which faculty and students engage in partnership with communities to envision and develop solutions to local and global challenges.

Dr. Corrales has 14 years working in higher education. Before joining UTRGV he worked in and around community engagement initiatives at UT-El Paso and UT-San San Antonio. Dr. Corrales earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Education from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Doctor of Education from The University of Texas at El Paso.

Cordelia Rasa

Cordelia Rasa has been passionate about animal care her entire life. For just over 22 years now, she has been working with research animals, and began as a researcher , now overseeing the care of research animals for other researchers.

Cordelia has earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology, and a Master’s Degree in Entomology, as well as certifications for animal care, management, and surgery.

Esperanza Isabel Alaniz

Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Esperanza Isabel Alaniz came to the United States by the age of 16, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She is currently pursuing a Master Degree in Clinical Psychology, and is a member of the Behavior & Systems Neuroscience Laboratory at UTRGV.

Joseph Caleb Cantu

Joseph Caleb Cantu is a 2nd year student in the Clinical Psychology program at UTRGV. He graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Rehabilitation. In his undergrad, Caleb had previously been a part of Dr. Yu-Cheng Lin's Cognitive Science of Language & Education Lab, and is currently part of Dr. Gil's Behavior & Systems Neuroscience Lab, as well as Dr. Montiel-Nava's Child Developmental Lab. His interests lie in neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, and psychopathology. After graduation, he plans on obtaining his LPC and eventually his PsycD in Clinical Psychology.
