Animal Planet (stylized in all lowercase since 2018) is an American multinational pay television channel, and associated AnimalPlanet.com[1] website content, owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery Networks unit of Warner Bros. Discovery. First established on June 1, 1996,[2] the channel is primarily devoted to series and documentaries about wild animals and domestic pets.[3]

The channel was originally a joint venture with BBC Worldwide, and primarily focused on nature documentaries surrounding wildlife, targeting a family audience. In 2008, Animal Planet rebranded with a more mature programming direction, with a greater emphasis on aggressive and predatory portrayals of animals, as well as an increase in reality series following personalities involved in animal-related occupations and investigations. Animal Planet rebranded again in October 2018, pivoting away from its more aggressive branding.

In 2006, BBC Worldwide sold its 20% interest in the flagship Animal Planet U.S. network back to Discovery Communications.[7] The BBC maintained its 50% ownership in Animal Planet's European, Asian and Latin American channels, as well as a minority interest in Animal Planet Japan and Animal Planet Canada until November 15, 2010,[8] when BBC Worldwide sold 50% interest in Animal Planet and Liv to Discovery Communications for $156 million.[9] Animal Planet is additionally an associate member of the Caribbean Cable Cooperative.[10]

On February 3, 2008, amidst declining average viewership, Animal Planet underwent a major revamp in its programming and branding. The new lineup placed a larger focus on series portraying animals as "characters" in their own right, and more "aggressive" and story-based entertainment series targeting mature viewers 13-49 (such as Escape to Chimp Eden and the reality documentary series Whale Wars), as opposed to traditional nature documentaries and family viewing. The network also adopted a new logo, replacing its previous "elephant and globe" emblem with a stylized wordmark, and the new slogan "Same Planet, Different World". Network president Marjorie Kaplan explained that Animal Planet had been too "soft" and family-oriented, and that it was aiming to be "more aggressive and tapping into the instinctual nature of compelling animal content."[11][12][13]

In April 2010, Animal Planet introduced a new slogan and marketing campaign, "Surprisingly Human," as an evolution of the 2008 rebranding. The slogan reflected Animal Planet's increasing number of personality-based series following animal-related investigations and occupations, such as River Monsters.[14]

On October 15, 2018, Animal Planet unveiled a new logo, featuring a symbol of a jumping elephant resembling the original logo. The new branding symbolizes a new mission of "keeping the childhood joy and wonder of animals alive by bringing people up close in every way." The new branding coincided with the October 28 premieres of Crikey! It's the Irwins (a new series following the family of Steve Irwin) and Amanda to the Rescue, and the premiere of Big Cat Stories the following night.[17][18]

Additions to the channel in the late 2000s, such as Meerkat Manor and Orangutan Island, reflected its shift toward "predation programming" and more immersive storytelling. Animal Planet intended the new direction to help revitalize stagnating ratings, after primetime viewership of the network dropped by 9% in 2007.[13] Animal Planet added pseudo-scientific documentary, reality television, and sitcom shows to its line-up.

I will preface this with saying that I do enjoy some of the programs on Animal Planet, well just the game Warden shows(I may be part of the problem) but what happened to the rest of the shows on these channels. I know this is not a new thing but how did Animal Planet become a show prominently featuring shows about people like Tanked and Pit bulls and Parolees, why does History have little to know history and play shows like American Pickers and Pawn Stars(this is the most confusing to me), Discovery just became cars and other "reality" shows, Shark Week being the most glaring example of Discovery going off the deep end. And we are all aware of the the wasteland that TLC became. So what happened how or why did these channels go from featuring shows about science and nature documentary type shows to what they are now?

The owner of the Discovery Channel has agreed to acquire Scripps Networks Interactive for $11.9 billion, creating a 19-channel, lifestyle content network as it tries to increase its negotiating clout with cable distributors and advertisers.

Scripps channels such as HGTV, Travel Channel, and Food Network would join a Discovery Communications lineup that also includes Animal Planet, TLC, and OWN, giving the combined company about 20% of the advertising-supported pay-television audience in the U.S.

Animal Planet will offer sneak peeks from each episode of THE AQUARIUM via social platforms that include Twitter and Facebook. Additionally, individual profiles of different animals will be featured throughout the season and weekly Instagram stories will preview upcoming episodes. THE AQUARIUM Season One can be seen in its entirety by U.S. audiences on the Animal Planet GO app.

We're happy to help you with your problem with streaming Animal Planet Go and TLC Go. Suppose the issue persists after attempting the troubleshooting steps, and videos from other channels play fine. In that case, we suggest you contact the channel provider's customer support team to report the issue and get help. The channel developers themselves maintain channels on Roku. In this case, an issue within that specific channel likely needs to be addressed with an update from them.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help you.

All the best,

Eunice

After removing a channel, best practice is to restart** your Roku to clear its memory cache before reinstalling the channel. Did you do this? Without the restart you may not get a clean reinstall.

Now, having said that, both TLC and Animal Planet are part of the Warner Bros Discovery family of channels. This whole WBD group has been having server problems since roughly July 1 2023, so the problem may be at their end, not yours. List of Warner Bros Discovery brands: -brands/

Yeah, When I first started viewing it, I watched it about every single day. I think when they lost "The Most Extreme", "The Planet's Funniest Animals", "Pet Star", and all of those classics, the channel started to go downhill. When all of those freaky shows like "The Haunted" and "Monsters Inside Me" came, they lost even more views.

I haven't seen the Animal Planet since 2010, I was way put off by overzealous pet owners, that take their pets and pet based hobbies above and beyond normal acceptance, as a result we see more homo sapiens, rather than domesticated or wild animals we come to expect from the Animal Planet, all the while we get a negative portrayal of animals like "Monsters inside me" or "Haunted" which I don't care for at all, that is something more for the SciFi Channel. The History Channel, Discovery and TLC have all gone to the corporate meddling based on focus groups and target audiences, the illusion of learning is rather insulting to the original audience that first flocked to those channels, especially if we allowed Larry the Cableguy to host an American road trip show, that has little baring on history, and would have been better on the Travel Channel, but whatever, I now watch documentaries on the internet, without the ignominious spectacle permeating our media network.

I remember sometimes I used to watch Animal Planet, like there was some show about cops that arrested people for animal cruelty and stuff, and there was that show about like videos of funny pets or something. Haven't seen the channel in a long time, so I haven't seen any of those new shows though.

Television has basically destroyed itself so I wouldn't expect anything you see on the average channel to be any good. This is just an example of a once great channel becoming what the rest of TV is.
