Things were looking bleak. Reality had stopped making sense. There had to be somewhere you could go, even though this had definitively become the year of not going anywhere. Somewhere you could escape to for just a brief feeling of peace.
As you ponder these thoughts, your phone buzzes with a notification. Your GrubHub food delivery has finally arrived. You quickly throw on your face mask and head to the door. When you open the door, you are in utter shock by what greets you. A small, brown raccoon-like creature standing on his two back legs waves his little paw at you as you attempt to make sense of what you are seeing. The creature is dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts and is carrying a bag with the food you just ordered. With a gentle smile, he hands you the bag, and promptly walks back to his vehicle. Left speechless, you glance down at your order and realize there isn't just food in the bag. You reach in and pull out a Nintendo Switch and a handwritten note:
"Hello! I wanted to thank you for giving me such a generous tip for delivering your food. In return, I would like to gift you the opportunity to join me in my world. All you have to do is turn on this Switch and you will soon find yourself transported to a beautiful island where you can meet new creatures, partake in various island-themed activities, and do whatever else your heart desires. But I must warn you: once you turn on the Switch, you will lose track of time and it will be difficult to return to your own world. So be wise with your decision!"

You look up from the note to see that the mysterious creature has already driven off. A smile appears on your face as you close the door behind you and settle on the couch with your new game.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a video game for the Nintendo Switch that was released in 2020 during the start of the pandemic. With billions of people around the world following stay-at-home orders, this game became a popular pastime for many and a way to stay connected with their friends and families. Since Nintendo is a Japanese game development company, several aspects of this game are partially based on Japanese folklore. This storybook will further incorporate elements from these folktales to add to the characters found in Animal Crossing. The above introduction, for example, is loosely inspired by the popular fairytale of Urashima Taro where the protagonist helps a turtle who returns the favor by offering to take him to a beautiful underwater palace. When the main character wants to return to the surface, he is given a box and told not to open it. He finally reaches home only to find that his world had aged 300 years. Upset, he opens the box which ages him rapidly. The idea of losing track of time should be very relatable to players of this game. I hope you enjoy reading the rest of my storybook and are encouraged to read more Japanese Mythology as well as play Animal Crossing!
