Animation techniques & practices.
This is where I post my coursework and my own personal studies related to the module. Thank you!
Our task was to do a character design we could later use for 3D modeling. The character was to be drawn in a T pose so that every detail could be showing, as well as to make the modeling easier. We also had to do the side view for better understanding of it in a 3D form.
I did multiple sketches for the same character as well as other characters (the other sketches were done traditionally but I have yet to find a good way to scan the images.)
For this design, I really wanted to do a childlike character. I wasn't entirely sure of the direction at the beginning, but I was very inspired by a character in one of my favorite mobile games "Identity V" by NetEase. The character is called Tracy Reznik and the reason I like her is because although her design might make her out to be very childish, she's actually a mechanic and knows a lot. I wanted to play with that as my inspiration, but later my thoughts drifted somewhere else as I wasn't happy with my original sketches.
This was my first sketch for the final design after meddling around with what I could do to my very first sketches. I wanted to play around with shapes and I got very inspired by food hahah. I wanted to give her those "droopy" eyes that almost resemble egg yolk as well as giving her an egg beret.
As you can see, for my last and completely finished design, I did a bunch of changed compared to the previous drawings. I changed her skirt to pants which had been in the first sketch for her as well as I thought they'd look better. I made her eyes look a bit more tired to add to the kind of "weird" feel that the character has in general. The color of her hair is a color I usually never use for any of my pieces and I honestly just wanted to play around and see if it would fit and in my opinion, it does! Overall I am happy with my design and am looking forward to modeling it in Z-Brush.
These past weeks I haven't had access to proper internet connection but I used what I had to look up videos on ZBrush to get properly started before working on my own project.
I got very inspired by artists that specialize in 3D sculpting such as Danny Mac and Hannu Koskinen who's also from Finland like me. I was really interested especially in the videos where people where turning their 2D designs into 3D, which is similar to what we're doing for this module.
I think the process of being able to make something look even more "alive" this way makes everything very interesting.
Down below you can see some of Hannu's work, which is way more detailed than the things we're doing right now, but still works as a great inspiration.

I included some of my inspirations for the process above as well as some of my sketches that I did for this project. I was very inspired by Hannu Koskinen and his work for Rovio, which is also the company that has created many famous games such as Angry Birds.
For my own process I wanted to begin with focusing on shapes only. I wanted to play around with very minimal figures and see what I could come up with. It was really fun and interesting and I actually ended up wanting to go for something very different than my very first finished design for the character that I was going to use for my character build.
After trying to develop more ideas and practicing different shapes, I finally figured out what I wanted to do for the design.
I played around using cyber punk clothing as an inspiration for the outfit to create something interesting, yet somewhat simple. I originally wanted to create a female character with a rather small build, but ended up going for a male one instead. I am waiting for the idea to be approved so I can go on forward with colors and begin the character build.
Here's one of the sketches I did for the character design above, but ended up changing quite a lot in the end. I still wanted to include it since I think it turned out quite nice as well.
