Inner landscapes is a body of work which draws from real brain scans of individuals who have suffered neurological trauma. Transforming the stark, greyscale, medical image into an inner portrait, a celebration of human spirit in overcoming adversity. Each portrait evolved from an interview with the participant and was created using three colours they nominated and the title of each portrait was supplied by the volunteer, a saying or thought that summed up their experience. My aim was to turn their experience into something beautiful. After painting exterior landscapes and becoming fascinated by neuroscience the leap into painting interior landscapes seemed a natural one!
In addition I wished to challenge the very nature of what makes us ....... well.... us, with botox, plastic surgery and deep fakes I ask the question , is painting the internal offering us a more authentic picture of identity?
Thanks again for all my participants, it has been both a pleasure and a humbling privledge to work with you.
If you have a brain scan and you would like you inner portrait painted , do get in touch.
