The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Rationale: In my Middle Grades Literacy Class, we were all assigned a some research on a specific topic. We were required to do the research and then share the key facts/important take aways with each other in a video response.
This activity allowed the students who were all future teachers to collaborate with one another and gain valuable information in a small fraction of the time that would be needed to do all of the research on your own.
The knowledge itself was not the lessson here. The bigger idea is that it is important to put our minds together and collaborate as teachers. When you work together, you can accomplish so much more. My boss used to call it, "working as a well oiled machine." The saying "there is no I in team" still stands proven. This is important for me as someone who likes to do things on their own. I need to work with others for everyones benefit.
Rationale: This picture is of my son at Black Light Paint Night at Coal City Elementary School; my first placement. This event took place after my placement was already done. On my last day, many of our students were upset that I was leaving, so I told them I would likely be seeing them again in the community, but specifically at this event.
The event was coordinated by the Art teacher, she set the bar really high for going above and beyond inside and outside of the classroom. This even took place in the evening and it was free, they used grant money she was able to get for the school. The students, parents, families, and teachers got together for a fun night of painting with glow paint on canvas in black lights. This was an awesome experience.
I was able to reconnect with the school staff and the students and bring my son in for a great fun night. This is the type of experience you learn about being a teacher is being a part of a community. It is important to show up not just to school but outside of the school to events like this. This demonstrates care, you are helping out and supporting you collegues, and having a fun night outside of everyday routine.
