This is the first of three reads of a focus story for comprehension instruction during hybrid learning. Since students were only at school in person two days a week, I would frontload their learning with companion texts and the "get the gist" first read in preparation for the bulk of instruction and work that would follow on our in person days. A literature response in the form of a Thinking Prompt using a language frame was assigned to learners in which students could submit a drawing or video from home. These At Home lessons were recorded using Screencastify and assigned through Seesaw for both cohorts of Transitional Kindergarten students.
This is a short clip of our daily Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons for Pre-K in which students are provided with explicit instruction combined with physical scaffolds to reinforce the nature of each of the tasks.
Process Writing
These are kindergarten science-based Informative/Expository process writing samples. Picturing Writing and the mandated Step Up to Writing model were used during instruction. These students were in an advanced English Language Development cohort and came to my classroom daily for 45 minutes of instruction.
Provocation Stations
The following are samples of standards-based, question-driven provocation stations in which students explore concepts through hands-on experiences and demonstrate their understanding using a variety of tools, objects, and loose parts. These stations can be used as ongoing independent practice of standards currently being addressed or as guided reteaching for students who need extra support. I wrote facilitation questions to guide conversations between adults and children. These facilitation guides can be used by teachers, para-professionals, cross-age tutors, or parent volunteers. These stations and guides continue to evolve as my practice with them continues.
These are student samples of projects I created as culminating activities for comprehension book studies. Pictured are The Bad Seed, Ribbit!, The Lorax, The Smart Cookie, and Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!
These student projects are letter crafts I created as a scaffold for phonics/phonemic awareness and a culminating project.
School and Parent-Organized Cultural Events
A celebration Dia de los Muertos was spearheaded by our English Learner's Advisory Council. Pictured are students in traditional costumes and the Sugar Skull craft I created to use in for the parade.
This celebration of Songkran, or Thai New Year, was organized by a group of parents volunteers in my classroom. Pictured is the feast table and girls in traditional costumes.
This is a celebration of Cinco de Mayo that was organized by a group of parents volunteers in my classroom. Pictured is the feast table children in traditional costumes.
Student performances are one of the highlights of the school year for students and parents alike. These clips are samples of my promotion program from my last year in kindergarten.
