Expertise in Body Contour Surgery
Dr. Winthrop specializes in a full spectrum of body contouring procedures designed to reshape and refine the body by removing excess fat, tightening skin, and restoring balanced proportions. His surgical approach focuses on achieving natural-looking, harmonious results tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy.
Body Contouring Procedures
Dr. Winthrop performs a comprehensive range of surgical procedures, including:
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) – Removes excess abdominal skin and tightens weakened abdominal muscles to create a firmer, flatter midsection.
Mommy Makeover – A customized combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s body following pregnancy and childbirth.
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) – Enhances the shape and fullness of the buttocks through fat transfer techniques.
Panniculectomy – Removes excess skin and tissue from the lower abdomen, often following major weight loss.
Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) – Tightens and reshapes the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat.
BodyTite Skin Tightening – Advanced radio-frequency technology used to tighten skin and improve contour after fat removal.
Liposuction – Surgical removal of stubborn fat deposits to sculpt and refine body contours.
Understanding Liposuction
Liposuction has become so common in modern cosmetic surgery that most people simply refer to it as “lipo.” Yet despite its popularity, liposuction remains a complex surgical procedure that requires the skill and experience of a highly trained plastic surgeon.
Dr. Winthrop has performed thousands of body contouring procedures, helping patients achieve long-lasting improvements in body shape and proportion.
“In the most basic sense, liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits,” Dr. Winthrop explains.
One of the reasons liposuction can produce lasting results lies in the nature of fat cells themselves.
“Fat cells cannot migrate or multiply,” Dr. Winthrop explains. “Once they are removed from the body, they do not return. That means the contour improvement achieved with liposuction can be permanent—even if a patient gains some weight in the future.”
Areas Commonly Treated with Liposuction
Women are the most frequent recipients of liposuction procedures, although men also benefit greatly from body contouring surgery.
For women, liposuction commonly targets:
Waist
Outer thighs
Hips
Abdomen
Inner thighs
Knees
Arms
Calves
For men, treatment areas typically include:
Waist
Lower abdomen
Chest
Under the chin
“In the hands of a skilled surgeon, liposuction remains the gold standard method for improving body contour in areas affected by excess fatty deposits,” Dr. Winthrop says.
Advanced Technology: BodyTite
To enhance results in patients with reduced skin elasticity, Dr. Winthrop often incorporates BodyTite technology into body contouring procedures.
BodyTite uses bipolar radio-frequency energy to gently heat connective tissue beneath the skin, causing it to contract and tighten while improving skin firmness.
“This technology delivers radio-frequency energy in a precise, controlled manner that tightens connective tissue and improves skin tone,” Dr. Winthrop explains. “It does not require larger incisions and does not increase recovery time.”
He considers BodyTite one of the most effective technologies available for skin tightening short of a full tummy tuck procedure.
Determining the Right Candidate
While liposuction can produce dramatic improvements, Dr. Winthrop emphasizes that not everyone is an ideal candidate.
One of the first questions he asks patients is:
“Where is your fat and how does it look?”
Fat that is soft and easily pinched generally responds best to liposuction. Skin tone also plays an important role in determining the outcome.
Patients with very loose skin—such as women after childbirth or individuals who have undergone major weight loss—may benefit more from procedures such as tummy tuck surgery, which removes excess skin while tightening abdominal muscles.
Dr. Winthrop also makes it clear that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.
“Patients who are significantly overweight and expect liposuction to replace diet and exercise are likely to be disappointed,” he explains.
The Importance of Surgical Expertise
For optimal results, Dr. Winthrop recommends choosing a surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, ensuring the doctor has undergone the extensive training and rigorous testing required to perform advanced cosmetic procedures safely.
To achieve the most precise sculpting results, Dr. Winthrop performs liposuction using the tumescent technique, widely regarded as the most advanced and safest method.
This technique involves injecting a specialized solution containing lidocaine for anesthesia and epinephrine to control bleeding before fat removal begins. The method reduces blood loss, improves fat removal efficiency, and allows for more refined body sculpting.
Recovery & Results
Recovery from liposuction is typically faster than many patients expect.
“Most patients return to work in about four days while wearing a compression garment,” Dr. Winthrop explains. “When the procedure is performed by a skilled surgeon, recovery is usually quick and discomfort is minimal.”
Most patients require only over-the-counter pain medication during the recovery process.
With proper surgical technique and careful patient selection, the results can be beautiful, natural, and long-lasting.
Through his expertise in body contour surgery, Dr. Andy John Winthrop continues to help patients reshape their bodies, restore confidence, and achieve the balanced proportions they desire.
