Program Note:

Three Miniatures was written for the Eastern Standard Trio Composition Contest in 2019. Having heard the trio perform on several occasions I wanted to write something different and unique for the group. A majority of their repertoire is narrative program music and in wanting to add a different voice the result came to be these dance movements. The first two movements are based on process music and concepts that I have taken an interest in and I write them rather quickly in the middle of March/early April. But I struggled to find a way to close out the piece. It wasn’t until July, as I was spending my summer in Interlochen, Michigan that these ideas finally came to me. I want to thank the Eastern Standard Trio for selecting this piece as the runner-up for the Composition Contest from 2019 and for selecting to premiere this work on their 2020 Ohio/Pennsylvania tour.
