Open/Closed Spaces (2021)
for solo piano (~15 minutes)
Program Note:
Richard Serra’s artwork has been something new and exciting for me. His use of raw materials in unique space creates an experience for the viewer unlike anything they have ever witnessed. Serra’s use space has been the inspiration of this piece which is based off of closely packed six mirror chords. These chords in their original cluster state are juxtaposed with more open or widespread voicings, and with more typical voicings. This piece also makes use of a tone row which was derived from the original chords and also piano pedaling technique that requires the pianist to catch the resonance of the piano with the pedal.
