Throughout my adult career worked as a freelance media composer for film and television, gaining credits on over 30 television productions for the BBC, Granada, Carlton and Discovery, as well as independent production companies such as Multi Media Arts, Planet Wild and Stick and Rudder Films. The following are examples of some of the projects I've been lucky enough to work on.
I was commissioned to create arrangements of the Question of Sport theme music for two iterations of the iconic show starting 1998. They were both used for several series.
Astrauis are a satellite launch company based in Scotland. I wrote and produced the music for their promotional video in 2023. The brief was to write something with the atmosphere of Interstellar and the impact of Thus Sake Zarathistra from 2001 a Space Odyssey. I really enjoyed creating a musical narrative for this un narrated piece and am really pleased with the results, as were the company.
I scored and produced the music for this award winning horror comedy realeased in 2015. It went on to win 10 awards at various film festivals around the world. It was such a brilliant experience working with Henry Davies and his production company on this little gem of a piece.
I wrote and recorded the music for this fantastic stop frame animation made by Adam Taylor whilst he was an MA student at Falmouth University in 2018. Adam has gone on to work as lead animator on some incredible animations such as the academy award winning Pinocchio and the latest Chicken Run. I have a suspicion we will see him pick up many awards of his own in the future. The brief was to support the narrative in a traditional way using Appalachian instruments. Adam also wanted as much live recording as possible so I learned to play the banjo, sang and whistled all the vocal parts and played a jug bass and many other percussion instruments. It was a fantastic experience.
In 2012 I wrote and produced two pieces of music for Goldfish TV, an independent production company who were making short animations to be played at the end of an online game made for the BBC. The game encouraged literacy with young children. I had never written any Alpine Horn music or Paris Salon style piano waltzes so I really enjoyed the challenge.
In 2011 I wrote the music for Richard Macer's three part BBC TV series on independent department stores.Ri
In 2008 I wrote and produced the music for the BBC National Lottery game show presented by Tess Daly. The show was made by BBC Scotland and ran for 8 episodes. i
In 2008 I also wrote and produced the music for this BBC series. It was broadcast live everyday for a month from Battersea dogs home in London.
I wrote and produced the music for this TV advert in 2017. This was a bit of a departure as I hadn't scored any TV commercials before then but it was a lot of fun and I was very pleased with the results. You have to pack a lot into a very short space of time!
In 2020 I wrote and produced the music for a children's animation pilot called "Boys Verses Girls". It was a very cinematic production and I had a fantastic time creating the orchestral mock ups for each scene. I was particularly pleased with this race scene from the start of the movie. I have included an MP3 so you can listen without the dialogue.
For the final project of my Masters in Creative Practice at Falmouth University in 2017 I created an immersive geolocative audio experience that placed original music and found text within a landscape. You can listen to the project here in armchair mode or go to Pendennis in Cornwall and experience it in real life. Select the white 'Pendennis' button. When the app opens, drag the lighter blue circle onto the darker blue areas to hear the audio clips.
