Introduction:
One of the primary projects of St Mary's University GSS Services is wetland mapping. We are one of the primary wetland mapping services in the United States. GSS has worked with multiple State, National, and Local government bodies to improve understanding and utilization of wetland. Minnesota, Vermont, North Dakota, New Mexico, and Alaska are all areas where GSS has done wetland mapping. During my time at GSS, I primairly worked on mapping in different parts of Alaska.
Work Samples:
While working in the Gates of the Arctic National Park we focused on both NWI and Riparian mapping. In addition to this we mapped flow lines of rivers and streams. These combined allowed us to understand both water flow, and vegetation cover. Having this information leads to better analysis on animal habitats, and the environmental impacts of human activates. Specifically, due to this being a national park and preserve, recreation and protection of animal habitat was a main focus of this project.
Once mapping is complete, a QA process is conducted. First edge mapping is involved. This is the process of comparing two sections that were mapped separately, and reconciling the differences between them. Second, an in house QA tool is run. Those tool looks for same adjacency issues, slivers, and polygons that are too large, amongst others. Once these tasks were completed the finished section was given to a supervisor for final assessment.
