I have lived in Van Ness with my wife and our dog since 2020. I'm a tenant organizer who has been active with the Van Ness South Tenants Association (VNSTA) at 3003 Van Ness Street. By day, I work in large-building general contracting here in Washington, DC.
I'm a passionate tenant rights activist who, along with others from the Van Ness South Tenants Association, have fought to make sure that the rights and procedures of the Tenants Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) are followed. These rights were recently threatened when a housing conservancy organization, backed by Amazon and JBG Smith, lobbied the council for an emergency exemption to TOPA which would have deprived the residents of 3003 Van Ness and two other large buildings of this important right. You may read my advocacy against the measure here. I've worked on many other VNSTA initiatives which have led to improved conditions in a number of ways, from drawing public attention to neglected repairs, organizing a mass DCRA inspection day for people with major problems in their apartments and more. VNSTA initiatives have also led to security improvements, security camera upgrades and greater accountability to tenants. There is more work to do and as ANC 3F05 commissioner, I will put the rights of tenants first.
I'm a determined advocate of affordable and workforce housing as well as the continuance and expansion of rent stabilization for the protection that it provides people from massive rent increases.
I bring an abundance of useful knowledge and experience from a decade of professional experience in the Commercial Real Estate industry. I have managed affordable and market-rate, multi-family and senior housing as well as office, industrial and retail. I've been a team member on the construction of two multi-family development projects totaling over 550 added rental units in the last 4 years.
Through my work with VNSTA and professionally, in some ways on very different sides, I've gained a strong record of cooperating with and getting results and accountability from DCRA, DOEE, DDOT and other agencies. I intend to build on my working relationships with and understanding of these agencies and others for the benefit of all of the people of ANC 3F05.
I have a strong desire to bring community members together and get people involved in civic engagement, community organizing and group community service and social activities. My ideal community is friendly, compassionate and inter-reliant; where neighbors put their unique skills towards each other's mutual benefit in a variety of big and small ways and all people thrive.
