Coat maintenance is part of poodle healthcare. All Poodles require regular grooming, at least about once a month. For younger poodles or those kept in longer coats, washing and trimming is done more frequently — often weekly. Grooming isn't terribly difficult, but it requires time and consistency.Poodles are not brushed daily. Instead a more extensive grooming routine should be followed regularly, including the following steps:
Washing.
Drying with a dryer while simultaneously brushing the coat straight with a slicker brush. This straightening prevents tangles.
Going through the coat with a slicker brush and comb to ensure there are no tangles left in the coat.
Trimming the face, neck, paws, tailset and genitals with trimmer.
Scissoring the rest of the coat.
Nail trimming and checking the ears, cleaning if necessary.
Ponytails and wrapping for long-coated poodles.
A long show coat does not limit dog’s life. My own dogs, despite their long show coats, enjoy nature daily and swim during the summer.Learn more about grooming on the Finnish Poodle Club’s website: https://villakoirakerho.com/turkinhoito/
Guardian homes / cooperative homes
Very few dog breeders in Finland can keep a large pack of dogs at home. To ensure the quality and continuity of breeding, breeders place the most promising individuals in so-called guardian homes. Thanks to these homes, breeders have access to enough breeding dogs, allowing them to make selective choices and use only the most suitable dogs for breeding.A dog lives in a guardian home like any pet. However, the breeder retains ownership and thus the right to take the dog to shows and use it for breeding as agreed. The breeder covers the costs related to breeding, while the guardian home is responsible for all normal living expenses. This arrangement offers a chance to receive a promising puppy in terms of temperament, structure, and health, along with close support from the breeder. At the same time, the guardian home plays a valuable role in enabling responsible and high-quality breeding.
Dog Shows
Dog shows are one hobby among many. Judges evaluate the dog’s structure, movement, and temperament in relation to the breed standard. Above all, dog shows are social gatherings for dog people, where they enjoy summer days with their dogs and meet fellow enthusiasts.Typically, a well-tempered and thoroughly socialized poodle enjoys being at dog shows. Dogs that regularly participate in shows often learn to enjoy the attention, toys and treats they receive in the ring. For breeders, dog shows hold special significance: especially in companion breeds, dog shows are the main way to network with other breeders and get a look at potential breeding dogs. They also offer an outside expert's assessment of a dog, helping the breeder remain critical of their own breeding work. The atmosphere of dog shows is created by the participants themselves. So let’s enjoy the hobby in kind and supportive manner.
