Ancient Egypt was ruled by Pharaohs. Pharaohs were like kings or emperors. They were the supreme rulers and religious leaders of the land. Pharaohs ruled both upper and lower Egypt. The Pharaoh was often thought of as one of the gods. The Pharaoh's wife was called "the Great Royal Wife." A pharaoh could be a man or a woman, but most were men.
Ancient Egyptians made many contributions that still influence us today. Ancient Egyptians used symbols and pictures called hieroglyphics as their written language. This led to the development of other written languages. They were also responsible for making a 365 day calendar and a clock. They also made paper from a plant called papyrus that grew by the Nile River.
Egyptians of old also were responsible for creating pyramids. These were enormous structures made from stone that were used as tombs for the Pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians were pretty awesome.
