Building an educational app involves bringing together multiple disciplines, with their respective knowledge and practices, in order to develop a final product with a specific purpose. This is a complex real-life problem, that cannot be solved with a unilateral disciplinary perspective. In developing the app we bring together: the psychological theories and practices related to adolescent identity formation and career planning, instructional design, gamification, multimedia content development and technical knowledge involved in app development. It is a challenge to find the common ground that will best serve the educational goal of the final product. The complexity of this real-life challenge and limitations of disciplinary boundaries can benefit from a transdisciplinary perspective.
In this paper, we explore using the transdisciplinary methodology to integrate different knowledge and practices necessary to develop an educational app. The paper focuses mainly on developing an engaging learning experience for the students through storytelling and multimedia content as a part of the gamification strategy. We present the transdisciplinary framework that guided our process, the challenges and the solutions we found. Even though transdisciplinarity is a widely used concept, the use of the transdisciplinary methodology in researching and creating solutions for complex problems is still a developing practice. We offer an example of this approach that can be developed and adapted in future situations.
