"Conducting is not my thing Roland, playing trombone is my thing!" Our training is often as a musician, with a major in a solo instrument or voice, leading to learning about education, government policy in education and administration. Conducting is pretty low on the list. Roland reflects on his career as a teacher, music educator, administrator and part-time conductor.
Roland is an ABODA National life member who is an active conductor. Formed in 1986, Roland has played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and direction of The Grainger Wind Symphony as Music Director and Principal conductor. He has promoted emerging composers of wind band in the annual Made In Australia concerts. He has deep knowledge of the repertoire in contemporary Western art music, classical orchestra styles, music of film and music theatre and is exploring the Studio Ghibli music of Joe Hisaishi. Through a sustained career as a teacher who conducts, he has nurtured an enormous number of musicians to do their best and to keep developing. Roland has been a key figure in the music education in Victoria with a deep understanding standards in the music curriculum and assessment in the Victorian Certificate of Education. He was the Director of Music at Carey Baptist Grammar School for 19 years, and Blackburn High School for 14 years teaching classroom music and conducting school ensembles. During his time their music program became embedded into the school’s culture and community. He teaches conducting over zoom at Christ University Bangalore, India.
