Ray Kuschert, Writer & Author

Ray Kuschert is an Australian writer, educator, and one of Vietnam's most recognised expat voices, with more than thirteen years lived in and around Ho Chi Minh City.

His connection to Vietnam runs deeper than most. In June 1965, his father arrived in Saigon as a young Australian soldier, serving a year of active duty that would leave its mark on the family for decades. When Ray first visited the country in 2012, it felt less like a holiday and more like a homecoming. He never really left.

As a writer, Ray has spent the better part of a decade contributing to Tuoi Tre News, the English-language edition of Vietnam's iconic Tuổi Trẻ newspaper, one of the country's most widely read and trusted publications. His articles cover the full range of life in Vietnam, from travelogues of overlooked provinces and the culture of the streets, to frank observations on expat life, mental health, and what it means to make a country your own. In March 2025, he took out first prize in the prestigious "Thanh pho cua toi" (My City) writing contest, beating more than 1,000 entries from local and international authors. His winning essay, "Thank You for Letting Me Into Your Heart," tells the story of why he chose Ho Chi Minh City as his permanent home. Ray has also contributed to the collaborative anthology One Country, 20 Perspectives, a collection of expat stories translated into Vietnamese and published to bridge the gap between foreign residents and the local community.

Before writing and teaching, Ray spent a long career in senior security management in Australia, an experience that shaped the no-nonsense, ground-level perspective that runs through everything he puts on the page.

His debut book, The Catholic Whistleblower is now available with more books to be released this year. The book marks a significant step in Ray's evolution from newspaper contributor to published author, with more writing projects already underway.

Ray lives in Dong Nai Province of Vietnam with his family.
