This map was created using railway data from Environment and Climate Change Canada and the US Department of Transportation. The original data included railways of all types and uses, so some manipulation was necessary to clip the data to only passenger railways, as well as to merge the US and Canada datasets together, which included removing several duplicate entries where US rail service enters Canada. The time zone boundaries and state and province boundaries were obtained from Natural Earth.
To make this map, the original data for train stations also had to be manipulated in order to show a distinction between major stations and other stations for labeling purposes, since labeling every station on the map was not feasible. The dataset did not include a metric for station size, so I instead selected stations that overlapped with cities in a dataset of larger cities from Natural Earth and created a new feature class from this selection.
The illustration on this map, as well as the clock hands and a few highlights to make the informational blurbs stand out, was done in Procreate.
