The objective of this project was to make a model showing ideal locations for a hypothetical couple to purchase a home in Maricopa County, Arizona. The couple was considering four criteria in their search: they wanted to be close Chandler Community Hospital, close to Phoenix Community College, in an area with a high percentage of residents ages 40-49, and in an area with high average home values.
The model chosen to take all of these factors into an account was a Linear Combination Model. In this model, each search criterion was reclassified to a common scale of 1-3, with 1 being the most suitable. For example, the distance from Chandler Community Hospital was reclassified so that distances of 10km or less became a ranking of 1, distances between 10 and 25km became a ranking of 2, and distances greater than 25km became a ranking of 3. All four criteria were then combined in a linear expression to create the model.
Five different versions of the model were created. The Equal Weights model considers all four criteria equally. Each of the other four models puts more emphasis on one of the four criteria by increasing its weight in the linear expression.
