Abstract: Existing theoretical and empirical evidence on the determinants of students’ performance reveals a direct link between pre-primary education and achievement test scores in primary school. Relying on the first-of-its-kind 2015 wave data from the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA), the present study analyses the associations between students’ performance in science and a broad set of variables, including regressors that proxy pre-primary education. Employing a Gini Regression Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) approach to account for model uncertainty, it is found that non-attendance in pre-primary education is a robust determinant with a negative impact on students’ performance in science. This result is confirmed both under Gini-BMA and OLS-BMA methodology.

Abstract: Evidence flourishes in the literature of a direct link between asymmetries in pre-primary education and achievement test scores in the primary school. However, children tend to reap the greatest benefits if school programs are of high quality. Premised on this commonality between pre-primary education and academic achievement in the primary school, and considering variations in quality indicators relative to students’,schools’ and families’ characteristics, this study mainly investigates the effect of universal pre-school education on the students’ academic results in 24 OECD and non-OECD countries. Data are obtained from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. Employing a Gini Regression Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) approach to account for theory uncertainty we find that attendance of pre-primary institutions has a beneficial impact on PISA test scores for 15-year-old students in most of the countries. However, there are cases where early childhood coincides with a decline in students’ outcomes in both reading and science.

Abstract: Given the pivotal role of inflation expectations in contemporary monetary policy, we posit that if monetary policy has effectively influenced inflation expectations, thereby altering the trajectory of total inflation, a structural break in the path of total inflation should be observable. Conversely, if inflation expectations have remained stable and monetary policy has had limited impact, a stable vector autoregressive (VAR) model should adequately describe the path of total inflation. To address these hypotheses, a non-linear specification of a threshold vector autoregressive (TVAR) model is employed, offering a comprehensive analytical framework for the examination of these dynamics.

Abstract: Evidence flourishes in the literature of a direct link between pre-primary education and achievement test scores in the primary school. However, children tend to reap the greatest benefits if preschool programmes are of high quality. Premised on this commonality between pre-primary education and academic achievement in the primary school, and considering variations in pre-schooling quality, this study mainly investigates the effect of universal preschool education on the students’ academic results in 22 OECD and non-OECD countries. Data are obtained from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. Employing a Gini Regression Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) approach to account for theory uncertainty we find that attendance of pre-primary institutions has a salutary impact on PISA test scores for 15-year-old students in most of the countries. However, there are cases where early childhood coincides with a decline in students’ outcomes in both science and reading.
