Disney's Live-Action Adaptations/Reimaginings of Sleeping Beauty
Transformation of the misogynist Femme Fatale archetype into a complex feminist character
I was inspired to analyze the live-action Maleficent films due to how they relate to our Disney Princess unit in class, more specifically the idea of the Femme Fatale from Rebecca-Anne C. Do Rozario's "The Princess and the Magic Kingdom Beyond Nostalgia the Function of the Disney Princess." They are prime examples of Team Disney subverting Walt's vision - that being in his stories, those who rebel against the patriarchy are evil irredeemable villains who must be thwarted. It is a forgotten relic of my childhood, only recently remembered as a result of the recent trending of Lana Del Rey's rendition of "One Upon a Dream" for the first film and clips circulating on TikTok. I remember being very fond of the first movie - even more so than the original Sleeping Beauty. I admired how they shifted the perspective from the King and Aurora to Maleficent, justifying her reasonings and ultimate regret for cursing Aurora as a baby, allowing her character to change for the better. In this project, I will explore how the Maleficent films successfully give Maleficent more depth through world-building and translating her motives and emotions so that they could be more understandable to the audience.
