The Ladies Auxiliary was originally formed in 1939 under the Charter of Unit #227 to assist the Men's Unit and to support the Veterans, their families and the community. We were located at 175 King Street, London, Ontario.
The Executive when formed was President Daisy Pllgram, Secretary Helen Dale and Treasurer Vera Linder.
In 1967 the men arranged for the purchase of land and the construction of our own building at 267 Adelaide Street South and at that time the executive was President Edna Tilford, 1st Vice Marg Tilford. 2nd Vice Isobel Sharpe, Secretary Madelaine Blackmore and Treasurer Audrey Fenwick.
The Ladies Auxiliary ran bingo's, did catering, visited the Veterans at Westminster Hospital and supported the Men's Unit in any way they could.
Unfortunately due to high interest rates and the cost of a very large addition the bank foreclosed on the mortgage and the property was lost.
In 1984 we reopened under a new Charter as ANAF #393 at 571 Dundas Street at which time the executive was President Betty Challis, 1st Vice Jan Willis, 2nd Vice Dianne Rodgers, Secretary Dodie McCracken and Treasurer Irene Connor. We continued our work with Bingo's and visiting the Veterans at Parkwood Hospital.
In 2001 we moved to 649 Colbourne Street which was a smaller location due to declining membership. The area that was rented needed to be completely gutted and redone and we reopened the doors to the members in August. The Executive at this time was President Sheila Klassen, 1st Vice President, Blanche Parney, 2nd Vice President Cheryl Riley, Secretary Mary Hooper and Treasurer Dorothy Rodgers.
We have continued our work in the Community by raising money each year for the Boys and Girls Club in the annual Swim-A-Thon. We donate to the War Amps, Childcan, and the Cancer Society.
The majority of our time is spent with the Veterans at Parkwood Hospital where we play bingo with them on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, we have a pie day on the 3rd Tuesday of each month were each veteran gets a piece of pie of their choice (apply, pumpkin, cherry, coconut cream or lemon meringue . We host BBQ's in July and August and we host two separate functions for the Veterans on 2 Perth as this is the dementia ward and they need special attention. In January of each year we delivery a bag of personal hygiene products to all Veterans in the Western County Wing, as these are not provided for them.
We continue to support the Parent Unit in anyway we can. We are now a very small group of only 19 members.
The members of the Ladies' Auxiliary are available to assist the club in its activities. As individual clubs are an important element in the structure of the Dominion Command, thus the Ladies' Auxiliary becomes a very integral part of the work of the club at all levels.
The Ladies's Auxiliary has many fund raising activities throughout the year, and funds raised locally are given to assist the local club, as well as other charitable organizations.
Membership is open to any female. We can always use more volunteers for a number of events.
Please contact Mary Hooper if you are interested in becoming a volunteer.
