AN INTERCONNECTED BEING CARD DECK: DOWNLOAD/PRINTABLE PDF FILE
DESCRIPTION:
This deck is designed to self-examine the effects of familial relations on current personal relationships. It can be played as a form of group therapy or as a form of self-reflection. The card deck approach works towards bridging the gap between traditional counseling approaches that may sometimes seem intimidating for those new to counseling. This intersects with the professional side of counseling and the "talking to a friend" type of relationship that is desirable and sometimes necessary for some clients. This Card Deck keeps family relationships at the center, the questions are made to evaluate one's family relationships and dynamics to evaluate how they have come to affect one's current relationships with friends, partners, and coworkers. This stems from Latinx values of Familismo, family connectedness, and the importance of fitting specific roles for the family's well-being (Edwards, 2006). Adolescents often describe the family as a significant factor in one's well-being. Therefore, this card deck will work toward self-analysis of one's importance of family (Edwards, 2006). This card deck will assist counselors in navigating familial relationships and facilitate self-exploration in clients.
PERSONAL STATEMENT:
I initially created this card deck because I was inspired by We're Not Strangers, which provides the internet with Card decks that address and work to understand one's own and others' values, beliefs, and experiences. I appreciated the sense of intimacy and rawness that comes with attempting to understand oneself on a deeper, more emotional, and spiritual level. In providing counseling resources, a card deck is not traditional but rather offers a different approach to traditional counseling psychology services. I personally find counseling very intimidating and think that the use of card decks is an easier, approachable resource.
