About Us

The Graduate Chapter of the American Mathematical Society at The University of Texas at Arlington (AMS UTA) was established on May 1, 2018, as an organization with the following objectives:

Foster community among graduate students in mathematics at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) by committing to the multi-dimensional needs of emerging mathematicians
Promote social interaction and professional development within the UTA Department of Mathematics
Offer a forum for scientific exploration and mathematical discourse through training, mentoring, observing, and practice
Connect graduate students with potential mentors, collaborators, colleagues, peers, and friends within the greater society of domestic and international mathematics by supporting travel to academic institutions and research institutions and by inviting visitors to UTA
Generate interest in participating in AMS sponsored activities.

President - Thomas Tran

My name is Thomas Tran, I am your AMS Graduate Student Chapter President at UTA. The beauty of mathematics lies in the fact that it is truly the art of logic. Like any art form, it is an expression of the human condition and an exploration into the human mind. Therefore, the study of mathematics can be characterized as the study of unique perspectives around us through logical reasoning and mathematical proofs are the medium through which we are able to convey that understanding.

I believe everyone can be a mathematician because I believe that everyone already is a mathematician. People do math every day, whether they truly mean to or not. What makes us uniquely human is predicated on the fact that we are able to reason logically and we have the capability to communicate that logic with each other. So, my job as AMS President at UTA is easy because all I have to do is show people just how cool that is!

And in case you haven't heard it today. You are going to be amazing because you already are amazing!!! :)

Vice President - Josiah Sweatt

My name is Josiah Sweatt, I am your AMS Graduate Student Chapter Vice President at UTA. I'm a doctoral candidate intent on earning my Ph.D in mathematics by the winter of 2029. I graduated with my BS in mathematics at UNT in the winter of 2021 and began my graduate work at UTA in Fall 2024.

As an undergrate at UNT I helped co-author a work titled "On the Cop Number of Subdivisions of Graphs" where I was mentored by Dr. Nam Trang and Dr. Stephen Jackson. As a graduate student my current academic interest lies in non-commutative algebraic geometry. However, other areas of math that interest me are game theory, logic and formal geometry.

Just a few of my hobbies include reading, hiking, camping, gaming and going out with friends. I also love taking my daughter out on the weekends to go rollerskating, swimming or fun community events.

My goal as your Vice President is to spread awareness of the resources available at UTA to both graduate and undergraduate students and I believe it is our duty as mathematicians to make those resources readily available to everyone.

I love mentoring and watching students learn and become invested in the things that excite them, especially if that thing is mathematics! I aim to make math fun and I believe that math is best when you can collaborate with others! Let's have an amazing semester learning and growing all together!

Secretary - Jacob Shank

My name is Jacob Shank, I am your AMS Graduate Student Chapter Secretary for the 2026-2027 academic year. I grew up in the state of Washington and completed my undergraduate degree at Central Washington University with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. I worked as a substitute teacher after completing my Bachelor's degree where I learned the value of passing on knowledge to the next generation.

I also love studying history because like mathematics, things tend to fall into place. I believe that there is a natural connection between mathematics and history because both follow a flow of human logic. My research interest are in Non-Commutative Algebra.

Treasurer - Sakia Akamah

My name is Sakia Akama, I am your AMS Graduate Student Chapter Treasurer for the 2026-2027 school year. I am also a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UTA and have been a tutor in both math and physics for 5 years and I have also particiipated in an REU in Texas.

I chose to study mathematics, the art of logic, because it is a powerful tool we can use to describe the underlying reality of the world around us and my research interests are in Quantum Tomography.
