The Aerospace Medicine & Space Health Society is an interdisciplinary student community at the University of South Florida. AMSHS welcomes students who want to understand how medicine, physiology, neuroscience, human performance, aviation, and spaceflight intersect. Members do not need previous experience in aerospace medicine.
Our mission is to make aerospace medicine and space health accessible to students; introduce related careers and research; build interdisciplinary connections; and create thoughtful educational programming around human health in aviation, spaceflight, and extreme environments.
Aerospace medicine examines the health, safety, and performance of people who fly or work in demanding operational environments. Its scope includes aviation medicine, space medicine, environmental physiology, occupational and operational medicine, and human performance. Questions related to this field typically involve factors such as altitude and hypoxia, acceleration, microgravity, radiation, isolation, confinement, sensorimotor adaptation, sleep, fatigue, and behavioral health.
As aviation and spaceflight place humans in environments unlike those on the ground, medicine must account for altered pressure, gravity, radiation exposure, workload, isolation, and other operational demands. Understanding those effects supports safer exploration and better human performance.
