Dr. P. Kuppusami is currently working as a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Centre of Excellence for Energy Research, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.

He has specialized in the area of surface modification, synthesis of thin films and coatings by electron, plasma and laser methods and in X-ray Diffraction and Electron Microscopy techniques.

He has published about 200 papers in the peer reviewed Journals and in the Proceedings of International and National Conferences He has also authored 7 Book Chapters, 4 review papers, received 15 best paper awards, 3 Metallographic Contest Awards and filed 6 patents to his credit. He has been the Principal Investigator of 8 Government funded projects and Principal Collaborator of 2 BRNS projects.

As a former Head, X-ray Diffraction and Surface Engineering Section of Physical Metallurgy Group of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, he has commissioned several world class facilities of thin film deposition units and x-ray diffraction system. He has significantly contributed towards the development of chromium nitride coatings by pulsed plasma nitriding and plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition for grid plate sleeve components of breeder reactors.

He has a wide experience in the development and characterization of high Tc superconducting thin films, intermetallics, thermal barrier coatings, transparent conducting oxides, electrolyte materials for solid oxide fuel cells, thin film supercapacitors, thin films for solar cells, hard coatings, multilayers of oxide systems, and transition metal nitride based nanocomposite thin films.

He has worked at Helmholtz Zentrum, Berlin as DAAD fellow( Indo German exchange programme) and at National Institute for Materials Science, Tsukuba as a Fellow of Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS). He has received the Cerificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing from the Journal of Nuclear Materials for the year 2017. He has presented papers and chaired sessions during his visits to several countries which include USA, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Singapore.

He is a life member of Indian Physics Association and the Indian Institute of Metals.

Presentation title:

Advanced Top coat Materials for Thermal Barrier Coatings

Abstract:

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are multilayered and multifunctional coating system consisting of oxidation and corrosion resistant metallic bond coat of MCrAlY (M-Ni or Co or NiCo), thermally grown α-α-Al2O3 inter layer and insulating ceramic top coat. Enhanced performance of TBCs strongly depends on their high thermomechanical properties and also on the processing techniques. Understanding the top coat materials properties such as structural, mechanical, chemical and thermal can prevent the failure of the coatings. The talk will dwell upon the development of bi-layer coatings of 7YSZ and GZ and investigation on TBCs subjected to isothermal and cyclic test at 1273 K and 1473 K.
