My name is Anabelle Marques Klovrza, a Brazilian scientist.
I am a 32-year-old biologist, zoologist, and ecologist.

I started my undergraduate course in biology at the
University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2014.
Since the beginning of the course, I have focused my interests on marine zoology and ecology, joining Professor André C. Morandini’s lab in 2015 and completing my undergraduate course in 2018.
Linuche unguiculata colony scheme. Od = opening diameter, Bd = base diameter, Lt = Total length. The arrow points to one of the outer rings of the polyp. Scale: 1.25 mm.
Segment diagram of a Linuche unguiculata epidermal tube showing its internal cusp and external rings. Arrow points to the base of the cusp. Scale 0.3 mm.
In this project, I analyzed morphological traits of polyps that were labeled as Linuche unguiculata from different places around the world.
I assessed whether the morphology of these animals was similar depending on their biogeographical range.
I also tried to resolve the taxonomic issue within the genus by associating it with the animals' biogeography.
My concluding Bachelor of Science project was:
Identification of species of colonial coronated scyphozoans (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa: Coronatae): the genus Linuche Eschscholtz, 1829.
A= stolonal; B and C= cauliflower; D= verticil type. E: cauliflower-shaped colony from the Mariana and Guam Islands. F: stolonal-shaped colony, located in Mar de Banda. G: verticil-type colony, located in the southern China Sea.

Experiment desing: changes of temperature related to the IPCC report from 2021.
I entered the Zoology master’s program at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2019. I continued my work with jellyfish under Professor André C. Morandini mentorship.
For this project, I conducted laboratory experiments on temperature variation and its influence on the asexual reproduction of four species of Scyphozoa:
From left to right: Aurelia coerulea, Lychnorhiza lucerna, Cotylohiza tuberculata, and Sanderia malayensis.
This project was titled:
Can climate change influence jellyfish blooms (Cnidaria, Discomedusae)?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, I was able to change the experiments without compromising data quality.
I was able to analyze different temperature variations on strobilation and other types of asexual reproduction in these species.
I analyzed the polyps of each species, counting and managing new polyps across the full experimental period.
Strobilation process of Aurelia coerulea polyp under an ad libitum feeding regime. Black arrows indicate the start of the strobilation process, red arrows indicate budding, and blue arrows indicate stolons.

I entered the Environmental Systems graduate program at the University of California, Merced, in 2023.
In the Life and Environmental Sciences department, I started my most recent project.
In my most recent project, I analyzed the environmental factors and physical attributes of different marine lakes in Palau, Micronesia. The available data were from the Coral Reef Research Foundation.
With such a diversity of environments, marine lakes provide an amazing opportunity to evaluate the biological and evolutionary responses of individuals, populations, and communities.
Scheme of a stratified marine lake transect. (1) Ocean level (tidal amplitude). (2) Tidal amplitude inside the stratified lake. (3) Rain that decreases the salinity of shallower layers of water. Some of the rain evaporates with the typical high temperatures. (4) Seawater column showing the mixolimnion layer, rarely mixed by the wind (8); the chemocline gradient, where the oxygen concentration declines to 0 ppm; and the pycnocline, where there is a sudden change in the vertical gradient of water density. In the chemocline gradient, there is also a pink layer that represents the presence of anoxic bacteria responsible for this color; the monimolimnion layer, under the chemocline, where there is little or no sunlight and no seawater mixing. The layer thickness can be different across lakes. (5) Seawater mixing inside tunnels and channels is represented by the blue cycle icon. (6) Colder water (denser water) comes from the ocean to the bottom of the lake. (7) Depending on the input of seawater, the chemocline can be mixed, expanding or shrinking the bacterial plate. (8) Effects of wind are lacking in stratified marine lakes due to the structure of the limestone around them (modified from Blanchette et al., 2020).
This project was titled:
Dichotomy or gradient? How marine lake states are distributed in Palau.
My main goal in this project was to :
Analyze whether there is a dynamic continuum of the physical attributes and environmental factors of marine lakes over time that blurs the distinction between meromictic (stratified) VS. holomictic (mixed) lakes and their dynamics.

Now, I am interested in how biodiversity can influence ecosystem stability and how we can improve marine ecosystems' resilience for conservation purposes.
Technical and data skills:
→ Fieldwork: Biodiversity and ecosystem assessment and field sampling across marine ecosystems.
→ Species in vivo and in situ husbandry: Marine life management (Cnidaria and Cheloniidae); macro and microphotography of marine life; metabarcoding and bioinformatic analysis for marine communities and species-level assessment.
→ Data Analysis and modelling: R-based multivariate statistical analysis (Markdown – fluent); Python (PyCharm – intermediate); Bash (fluent); reproducible data-analysis workflows.
→ Collaboration: Cross-institutional, international field coordination with diverse science teams; clear technical reporting; clear visualization and explanation of results to collaborators; expertise in writing and reviewing scientific papers; and data visualization for technical and public communication.
