Dr. Amit Shankar

Lab Head,

Assistant Professor,

DST-SERB Young Scientist

History

After completing my Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics in April 2015, I was awarded with one of the prestigious UGC D.S. Kothari postdoctoral fellowship to further carry out my research in University of North Bengal from December 2015. Later on, I was also awarded with SERB-Young Scientist Award, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and started working as Project PI there in University of North Bengal from October 2016, till I joined Kurseong College on 1st April 2017. Even after joining here in Kurseong College as Assistant Professor in Physics, I continued my research work in the Condensed Matter Physics. Slowly after receiving project grant from Science and Engineering Research Board, Govt. of India and necessary supports from our respected Principal Dr. Samir Bal, a research lab within Department of Physics established with one research scholar on 27th June 2018, which later on named as “Condensed Matter Theory Research Lab”.

About

Since the lab was started from zero, it took almost a year to make it fully functional and train the new students. Now, slowly the lab is grooming and at present one research project from SERB is in progress and one is already completed. There are total 6 members associated including supervisor. Two of them are already registered for Ph.D. in North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and two of them are in the mid of their Per Ph.D. course Work in North Eastern Hill University and Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University. The research scholars are supported with project fellowship, CSIR JRF, and research fellowship from NEHU. The research works carried out in the lab are presented in various national and international seminars organized in the different parts of the country, such as, SRM University; Chennai, IIT Jodhpur-Rajasthan; Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Krishnankoil-Tamilnadu; Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University, U.P.; NEHU, Shillong; Nepal Chemical Society, Pokhra, Nepal; St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and Salesian College, Siliguri etc, where we are introducing our Kurseong College. Similarly, the work carried out in the lab with our group members and national as well as international collaborator has been published in more than 10 international journals (detail available in

https://scholar.google.co.in/citations?user=HHqGasgAAAAJ&hl=en) and still there are 7 (seven) papers in line for publications and counting more. Even though, the lab is situated in an undergraduate college of small town Kurseong within Darjeelling Hills, where we lag in various resources, the quality of the research carried out in the lab is comparable to the national and international level which can be measured from the standard of the journal of publications. The topics of research that we perform are recognized globally and we are parallel with researchers from the various parts of the globe. We always aim for the journals that publish high quality research works from the different universities and research institutes from the country and abroad. Meanwhile, the students are also trained with the code of ethics laid down by the various agencies such as DST, UGC and recognized institutes nationally and globally.

Resources and Works

We basically deal with computational design of the materials that find its applications in different fields, such as magnetic storage devices, optoelectronic devices, thermoelectric devices etc., where we theoretically design new class of materials or modify them to optimize their efficiency. For this purpose we use different computational packages and we have such different computational codes that are available license version or the open sources, such as wien2k, quantum espresso etc. These packages mainly run on linux platform that requires good configuration computers. The computational facility in the lab is satisfactory with 24 hours online power back up to run those systems.

We are engaged on search of different types of materials and enhance their efficiency depending on their field of applications, such as

  • Spintronic materials, such as Full-Heulser and Quaternary Heusler alloys.

  • Optoelectronc materilas, such as transition metal dichalcogenides.

  • Thermoelectric materials, such as lanthanide filled skutterudites.

  • Other electronic, optoelectronic based nano materials.

Today we have grown two years old and still more to go deep inside and contribute towards the mankind. The interested persons on condensed matter physics or material research are always welcomed for their little contribution for the human society through imparting knowledge, we will be happy to work together.

Research Interest

  • Rare-earth based strong correlated materials, semiconductors, semi-metals.

  • Spintronic and optoelectronic materials

  • Structural and elastic properties.

  • Thermoelectric materials and their properties (focusing on their efficiency).

  • Electronic structure near the Fermi level.

  • Theoretical techniques, doping of heavy elements to see the effect on the band energies near Fermi level and enhance the thermoelectric efficiency by employing first principles method (Density Functional Theory, DFT) of calculation.
