Associate Professor Amit Pujari is a biomedical engineer and a neuroscientist with over 15 years of experience in medical device development and Neurorehabilitation engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor (Reader) of Biomedical Engineering at University of Hertfordshire, where he leads the Neu(RAL)2: NeuRAL Systems & Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies Laboratory.  Professor Pujari, also holds an honorary position (Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering) at the School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. He is currently a Royal Academy of (RAEng) Industrial Fellow, having recently completed his RAEng/Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship, both (fellowships) working on developing novel noninvasive devices for stroke and spinal injury recovery/rehabilitation.

Alongwith current and recent prestigious fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Prof Pujari is also a recipient number of other prestigious awards and recognitions including travelling fellowships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2009) and Winston Churchil Memorial Trust (2017), British Science Association's award lecture (2022), being recognised as one of the top 25 emerging leaders in the UK Healthcare Research by the Academy of Medical Sciences (2023) and being selected as an inaugural member of the UK Young Academy.

Having worked in Healthcare (NHS) as a Clinical Scientist/Engineer, Industry (as a Biomedical Engineer), and Academia, across different countries, Prof Pujari has acquired unique and diverse background. He has studied, worked and collaborated with some of the world's top institutions in biomedical engineering/neuroscience, including Strathclyde, Aberdeen, Leeds, and Alberta.

Prof Pujari is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and Member of the UK Young Academy. His mission is to apply his engineering and neuroscience skills to improve the quality of life and mobility of people with disabilities and chronic conditions.

Prof Pujari is really passionate about communicating science outside academia and has been an active and invited speaker, presenter and STEM ambassador for a number of years (please see professional tab for more details).

Current Research:

Prof Pujari's current research is in the area of optimising the use of non invasive neuromodulatory stimuli for sensorimotor improvement and rehabilitation applications, both in the healthy (elderly) and in neurological population (e.g. stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's). Amit uses various neurophysiological tools (high density EMG, Transcranial and peripheral nerve stimulation) and engineering tools (sensors and advanced signal processing methods) to understand the neurophysiolgical basis of vibration stimuli so that this improved understanding can be employed to develop effective rehabilitation device(s) and exercise(s).

Neu(RAL)2: NeuRAL Systems & Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies Laboratory:

The lab is well equipped for Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering research with the state of the art equipment.

Lab includes: High density EMG+EEG system (TMSi), traditional EMG system (Delsys- Bagnoli), new grid EMG system (Delsys- Trigno Galileo) with Neuromap Software, Peripheral nerve stimulation system (Digitimer), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (MagVenture), CED Hardware (Micro 1401 amplifier) + Software (Spike2 and Signal), custom designed and developed vibration and tactile stimulation devices for the upper and lower limbs (whole body vibration).
