I have been involved in J-PAL Middle East and North Africa (MENA) since 2021, initially as a Senior Policy Manager and, starting in September 2023, as the Associate Director of Research.

My main role is to lead the research activities aimed at generating rigorous evidence to enhance our understanding of whether and how programs work to reduce poverty in the MENA region. I ensure the highest standards of research ethics, data quality, and security while expanding the scope and impact of rigorous impact evaluations conducted by J-PAL-affiliated professors in Egypt and the MENA region. I also oversee the infrastructure and resources necessary for researchers to conduct randomized evaluations effectively.

J-PAL MENA, based at the American University in Cairo, leads J-PAL’s work in the MENA region. J-PAL MENA conducts randomized evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and helps partners scale up effective programs.

Our research team evaluates the impact of social programs and policies in MENA, covering a wide range of sectors including social protection, employment, education, and gender. Through online and in-person courses, we train implementers, policymakers, donors, and advocates on how to generate and use rigorous evidence. Our policy team works to institutionalize learning from evidence and disseminate research results to governments and other partners.
