In this time of national crisis, we are deeply worried and concerned about our future. We want peace to return to our country, and light to return to our city. We do not want to witness unrest, violence, or destruction. We want to live in peace, and we want our freedom of speech to remain intact.
We are ordinary students and citizens, united as one body with one purpose; peace. The countless deaths across the country have deeply affected us, and we are equally troubled by the ongoing violence and arson.
That is why every peace-loving person of Madaripur has gathered here today; to pay respect to the martyrs of the nation and to condemn all acts of arson, attacks, and threats.
Now, in the light of these lit candles, we will sing in unison with our bare voices to remember the martyrs and honor our brothers.
(This is a completely non-political, peaceful event. We sincerely request everyone to refrain from turning it into anything disgraceful or disrespectful.)
In 2018, a tragic accident occurred in Madaripur Sadar just after Eid-ul-Fitr. The cause was an illegal and unmarked speed breaker on the Madaripur–Shariatpur highway. We spoke with several officials from the Roads and Highways Department to understand the regulations. They informed us that they had not installed the speed breaker and confirmed that placing an unmarked speed breaker on a highway is strictly against the rules.
Two young boys were riding a motorcycle and had come from outside Madaripur, so they were unfamiliar with the road. As a result, they failed to notice the speed breaker in time and couldn’t slow down. That day, a rising young star lost his life; all because of an illegal, unmarked speed breaker.
After hearing the heartbreaking news, we tried to raise awareness through social media. The very next day, we decided to mark the speed breaker ourselves to protect others unfamiliar with the area. Our goal was to get the attention of both the media and the local authorities in Madaripur to prevent future tragedies.
